What devices should I buy?

My dad want me to spend USD1000 - 1500 on tech related stuff. It can be anything, but i want it to be useful for our business. Currently, i was thinking of developing a software that could handle customer record (image based - scan or taking photo). And and even in further time, we will be doing online business (for testing). So what do you recommend me to buy? 1) A android tablet + a desktop (used as a server to store data) 2) A AIO desktop (Look good ) 3) Hybrid laptop (Small storage) We need it to be reliable. There are only 2 user. Imagine you lose all your customer record... Disaster. So, what can i buy? It's a headache for me. How to implement those stuff into the devices......I want it to be easy and fast. Thank you!

How would we know what would be useful for your business? We have no idea what market you in, how your business works, or indeed anything about it at all. So we can't really say "buy this" because what may be useful for one company, may be useless for another. For example, in one job, a digital microscope would have been very handy - it would have saved me having to drive a couple hundred miles and beg a supplier for time on their kit. But now it would be a waste of money, because I don't need to look at inkjet faceplates any more.

There is only one way to prevent this: Backup Software[^] - Doesn't matter which device you are using. Every device has a chance to fail and screw your customer records. I have a mac with Parallels[^] running a Windows 8 for development at home. Fine solution, everything runs smoothly and the mac has enough power to fire it all. If you don't want to develop this way, buy a Laptop or a desktop (it doesn't matter) as long as you have enough power. I'd recommend an Intel i7 processor, an SSD where you can install the OS and programs and a normal HD for files and the dev files. 6 to 10 GB RAM should be fair enough and last some years...

Good point. I automatically assumed that we are talking about computer hardware for software development since we are on CodeProject :sigh: .

It was for software development: I was having huge problems with droplet size and placement and needed to look at the actual faceplate. It would have been very nice to have ultra high speed images of the moment of droplet ejection but there was no way the boss would spring for that kit. Turned out to be a combination of bad chamber design and non-round holes - so we told the hardware manufacturers to FOAD and went elsewhere as they insisted it was the control software that caused the problems. Took me weeks of driving up and down the M4 to our ink manufacturers who had electron microscopes and other fun hardware!

Hi. My apologize for this lousy designed question. The correct question should be "What is the best way to develop a low user customer information application ?" "The main feature I want is the ability to stored scanned document or photo" Sigh. Please help me up. I have a due date.

Just for customer records? A low-end laptop/desktop and a USB drive for back-ups should be plenty.

how about image scanning (i'm having trouble for scanning image using JAVA or even VB). Then, i was considering an Android tablet. If i used a tablet, i can take photo. But the down side is, it has very limited storage.

Then reserve fifty quid of the money for an all-in-one printer (and when the ink runs out, buy a new one). You can get too much distortion with photos, and if you can't save as TIFF, or similar, the OCR functionality can be very limited.

I already have a all-in-one printer. The main problem i have is, there aren't any easy to implement function to operate the scanner. That's why i'm getting away from those desktop. Maybe going to android would solve the problem by operating the camera instead of the scanner. Sigh...
