One case that annoys me is that I often want to google an url before deciding to navigate to it, how can you do that on Chrome? Obviously you can go to google.com and do it there, but that's a bit of a detour.

Yeah, it is a website. It is just really useful to select it in the drop down and search for a string. Not sure how they've done it, cos actually using the website is a complete pita, you cannot book mark the knowledge base, you have to jump through a series of hoops, and log in at one point, a log in that refuses to remember either my username or password.

... why do you insist in having a navigation bar AND a search bar :sigh: ? This is so '2000ish ( And I am usually not of the kind who would complain that there are too many bars, but ...). Furthermore, a navigation bar that throws you a popup error window ! This is even '1990ish.

Because sending everything you type to Google when you want a Google search is a UX optimization; sending every URL you type to Google as you type it is a privacy violation. Having to remember to type a prefix before every search so that it goes to Google for auto suggest while keeping URL autocomplete local is a UX degradation.

Yeah my employer is "stuck at IE8" :rolleyes: But that's OK. I am a smart chap and IT has may run things somewhat strict, it is not a total police state 'round here :)

Type a question mark before the url (or hit Ctrl+k) and it should search for it.

Get a portable version of chrome and copy to your desktop. (or leave on usb stick) If no usb allowed, send via email. Works for me on totally locked down public computers. I just open the usb with linux when I get home to make sure it didn't bring a virus home with me.

It's still a much neater UI to have 'type stuff here and I'll work it out', as long as it gets it right 99% of the time, which it does (because URLs are pretty each to recognise).

That was to head off the person who would have replied with "You can configure your browser to only send text to Google for search auto complete if you prefix your query in the unified address/search box with 'g ' (and 'a ' for amazon, etc)" because I don't consider it an acceptable option on anything with a usably large screen.

Did you actually read what I wrote? I want Google auto complete when I'm typing a search query. I don't want every URL I'm typing sent to Google.

I like the separate search box. I also like being able to customize the toolbar, making the buttons small and having my favorites on the left, though I did have to use an add-on to strip the bookmark menu of a lot of ugly. (Of my kids, two use IE, one uses Chrome and one uses Firefox. My youngest uses IE and her bookmarks are a horror--just a huge long list, but she finds things so I suppose it works for her. My second youngest, who uses Firefox, has no bookmarks; he remembers them all [yet manages for forget to do his homework.])
