Does anyone know why the huge majority of websites use a portrait format, but almost every computer monitor I have seen is landscape?
I design my wegpages as much as possible on a 960x700 pixels format (more or less) so the user rarely has to scroll on a 1024x768 screen. layout is dynamic enough to adapt the resolution. (this is black and white, reality is more grey, but I find that my websites require little scrolling with not too much info on one page)

Ever wondered why magazines have multiple columns on a portrait page instead of one column? It is easier to read that way. Plus people like to read down. If you use all of the horizontal space your website will appear sparse.

Because such design decisions are unfortunately not made by tech guys, but by managers, who look at landscape formatted powerpoint presentations all day.

Ultimately, reading down a column does not need any horizontal eye movement : the eye literally traverses vertically through a column, for instance. That's why reading columns feel better than long horizontal text. Computer monitors used to be almost squares, and then got more and more in that portrait format when 16/9 supplanted 4/3. To watch a movie, you need peripheral vision, hence the wide screens ( well, you don't _need_ it, but immersion is greater). And since it is easier to not use some screen space than to add more screen space on demand, the first solution won. The big improvement was the modularity of smartphones and tablets : Use them in portrait to read, and landscape to watch movies and play games.

It's not a waste of space if you don't run everything full screen all the time. You can adjust each window to the size you want it for the content it contains, and then lay them out on the screen so you can see what you want to see. Interestingly almost all of my windows actually end up around 4:3 landscape, apparently (looking at my screen right now).

I run a Portrait monitor, and a landscape one. Much to my surprise I have gravitated to Chrome on the Portrait, and VS on my landscape. The later I expected, but I was perfectly happy with Chrome in Landscape before I added the portrait monitor. Now when I have to have Chrome in landscape it looks odd, and seems slower to read (probably because I can't see the whole line of text with my peripheral vision and speed read the whole line without moving my eyes)
