I had my 4 hour job interview today and I think it went well, but that's a lot of people that have to sign off on it, so I am not taking anything for granted. Before this past week, I had only interviewed for jobs twice, so today I almost doubled my lifetime interview time. :) I want to thank those of you that wished me good luck yesterday. Soren Madsen

The last time I interviewed for a job (1974, actually), the company flew me to their city, took me to dinner and showed me the town (New Orleans!), put me in a hotel over night, then sent me through several engineering departments for a series of all day interviews. At the end of the day, I got a job offer on the spot that I couldn't refuse. So if they kept you talking, that means they didn't rule you out at the start. I hope your results are as good as mine were.

You are absolutely right about that. For many years, I was just lurking around here and benefiting from the great articles. I always told myself I wanted to get more involved just as soon as I had a little more spare time... I finally stopped kidding myself and started to join in. I am still looking for the right topic to write about, but I think I will start with a Tip. Soren Madsen

Just one of many factors I didn't happen to address. For salaries, why calculate the constant salary at the end of each performance review? Why not calculate the rate of increase, and have that increase occur on an hourly basis? Maybe one period, your pay rate increases by one penny per hour (first hour you earn $10, second you earn $10.01, third you earn $10.02). Next period, maybe your pay rate increases by 1.5 pennies per hour ($20 first hour, $20.015 the second hour, $20.03 the third hour). And if that's too much fluctuation, maybe the first year there are no changes to salary (that could be the starting basis for the exponential change).

For one of my jobs in college, the interview was basically chatting with my manager outside while he was on his smoke break. He started me at a whole $8/hour. :-\

I wonder who the sick, twisted individual was that thought 4+ hours of torturing interviewing someone was a good idea. I was reading up on a company early today that brings people in for 8 hour interviews and if they like you, they bring you back in for another 8 hours.... :omg:

Soren, I'm glad to read it was a good 'un you had. I've never been through a four hour interview like that and I reckon my longest was two hours. As long as you feel you interviewed well then it's equally likely they will have a similar feeling themselves after such a long session. I interview well and the process never stresses me. My only uncomfortable one was my first ever interview after I graduated in '77 and was with a local authority. There were six people sitting behind two tables and a solitary chair in front of them. It felt like a scene from the movie The Manchurian Candidate. It wouldn't have been out of place if they'd tied my hands behind me back and set about me with a length of rubber hose. I didn't get the job which was fine. :-D Let us know how yours went.

If there is one thing more dangerous than getting between a bear and her cubs it's getting between my wife and her chocolate.
