That should be illegal!

After seeing a comment elsewhere in this forum [^] I realised that there are a lot of things we take for granted today that if they had been invented or started up today would have been immediately declared illegal or too dangerous for to be let out in public and would have a slew of lawsuits following them around. The example in the forum message was: Radio - all that broadcasting of music for free - no way would that be allowed to start up today. Other things I can think of (in no particular order): Cars - way too dangerous! Have you seen the speed they can be driven at? ...and the pollution, and the noise they make! The first road accident from some idiot being hit because they crossed the road without looking would have the whole lot banned (a bit like Segways often are now). Television - all that free entertainment broadcast over the airways, radiation! Instant ban! Radio would be banned for the same reason. Who wants extra radiation being put into our unsullied, clean atmosphere; it could cause birth defects! Scissors - Do you know how many people have been killed and injured because of scissor accidents and murders? Coffee - The DEA would put an immediate stop to that. We would have addicts everywhere! New movie: "Coffee Madness!". Aeroplanes - Death potentially falling from the skies! [Those are "airplanes" for the US crowd.] Flashing lights on emergency vehicles - Not a chance; they could cause seizures or at least undue stress for observers! Flush toilets - What a waste of natural water resources - and are they hygienic? No way. Can anyone suggest others?
- Life in the fast lane is only fun if you live in a country with no speed limits. - Of all the things I have lost, it is my mind that I miss the most. - I vaguely remember having a good memory...

Keyboards - The potential to spread germs with other keyboardists is too great; as is the potential for repetitive stress injuries. User Generated Web Content - Facebook, Code Project, and so on. Think of all the images that could be uploaded and the curse words that could be written. Think of the children! Oh, and we wouldn't want to embarrass government officials by quickly spreading information. iPhones - Sooooo much radiation in close proximity to your brain. Water Bottles - Bisphenol A!!!! Candy - Causes or exacerbates the most pervasive health issues in our society today. Reminds me of Demolition Man, where salt and sex are illegal. Oh, and it seems they took some issue with toilet paper and replaced it with the three seashells.

User Generated Web Content - CodeProject, StackOverflow... think of all of the free code that is getting generated that we cannot tax people on. Plus who can you sue when things don't work right. this is just not acceptable.

Many of the over the counter meds would never receive aproval. For example Asprin would fail miserably due to it causing stomach bleeding and thinning of the blood.
Computers have been intelligent for a long time now. It just so happens that the program writers are about as effective as a room full of monkeys trying to crank out a copy of Hamlet.

If you are seeing ads you are not getting anything for free. Every ad you are subjected to is your payment for the show. Quick check at the top and bottom of the page. This message brought to you by Windows Azure and something called SpreadsheetGear. ;P

BBC Radio in the UK is free with no commercials. It is paid for by part of the BBC licence fee for TVs - which also provides commercial free TV. If you don't own a TV, you don't pay towards the licence fee thereby getting free radio (and free TV if you are watching someone else's).

I always say that when you want to find out why, follow the money. That's why I don't agree with some of your listed things. Here's the most obvious ones: Cars - More reliable and faster than horses for deliveries, there's money in that. Coffee - Drugs are forbidden because they kill productivity, some immediately, some other enhance productivity in the short term but kill it in the long term. Coffee enhances productivity. Alcohol on the other hand kill productivity in the short term (hungover on a monday anyone?), but in the long term it enhances productivity, in most cases that is. Aeroplanes - Same as cars, there's money in it, and it's superregulated. Flush toilets is an interesting one. Cars were considered environmentally friendly when they came around because they didn't leave heaps of dung and streams of horse piss in the streets. Cities in the old time were a smelly business, especially in the summer. So when the cars came around, the smell came from the courtyards instead, where the shithouses were. Enter the Water Closet. The water closet was invented much earlier (not by Thomas Crapper), but the breakthrough came after the car became popular.
