I created a LinkedIn profile a couple of weeks ago, mostly to know what people where talking about at lunch. This thing is intrusive as hell, trying to sniff my email contact list every other minute, sending tons of emails, so I deleted my account, which was useless anyway. Now I get a mail every other hour about "How to improve the visibility" of my account. The very one I deleted. To unsubscribe these unsolicited mails, I need to ... log in. In my deleted account. Fuck you, LinkedIn.

Useful. I have met and used some very good recruiters through LinkedIn.

I have never given my email address password for any of these social networks. I do not want them to a) associate me with all the people I ever contacted, b) read my emails and determine further my type of personality etc.

I have switched jobs twice in the last few years of which both I was discovered via LinkedIn. I don't actually use it for anything. I simply went through and set up my profile "linked" to as many people as I could as quickly as I could and then logged off and never looked back. Seems to have worked. I do get pings now and then of which most are garbage... But it does give me a warm fuzzy that if things got rough where I am there are other options. I am quite happy though so I do not really keep it up to date. I think you are suppose to keep the skills list growing or something like that. What I have on there is what I care about so I see no need to update all of the skills/tools I have. With that said though, because it notifies out when your profile updates it is somewhat important (IMO) to update it BEFORE you are looking elsewhere. Otherwise it can ping your HR etc. that you are updating and thus your management can deduce you may be looking elsewhere. Not a good spot to be in.

Like just about any site today, the first thing you do when joining is crank up all the security. I rarely get pestered by LinkedIn itself and find it a good way to keep contact with colleagues on a professional level. I've not gotten a job through LinkedIn, but have gotten interviews. I also got in contact with an old classmate from three decades ago. (The emails weren't unsolicited; you solicited them by joining. This is true of most sites.)

The emails became unsolicited by the moment I closed my account, though.

Probably not since you agree to receiving emails when signing up, but did not stipulate you did not want to receive them when closing the account. In essence you told LinkedIn that you wanted emails from them, but no account. The solution is to add them to your junk filter.

I think you overreacted. It asks you to import your email contacts, but you don't have to (just ignore it). You can set all email alerts to off (admitedly the setting it a bit hidden). Some things about Linkedin are good, like job offers :-0. Other things are no so useful. It tends to generate a lot of useless noise (Joe has joined group x, Joe has updated profile, Joe has scratched nose ... etc.)
