The team effort

When in fact the River is a well known Creek, the steersman doesn't know which bit to hold or which way to turn it, and the paddlers aren't given any paddles because they are too expensive...

Actually, it is not that bad, they are given paddles with holes in them-

So in your scenario you have a helmsman and a rowing crew, so who is the captain? Who makes the strategic decisions? Is there an engineer to keep the ship seaworthy? Do you have a Bo'sun? Which of you is 'The Cabin Boy'?

This was a discussion between me and my manager regarding the team effort. I imagined our company as a boat sailing in a river. I imagined the manager as the person who steers the boat, and the team members as the persons who paddle the water with the guidance of the manager. With all together they will reach safely. With any deficiency resulted from any of them they may get in the way.

Why would you need an engineer on a rowing boat?
An engineer does not necessarily deal with Engines. He could be a hydrodynamic engineer, a design engineer etc. I would suggest that on something as technically complex and with a high level of maintenance like a Rowing Boat[^] that having a structural engineer on board may prove useful.

The manager is paid to throw in water the one who rows more slowly than the other and makes the ship circle. As a side effect, he also has to throw someone from the other rowing side, to keep it balanced between left and right. The others have then to keep up the original pace with two less team members. That, and crocodiles, and the team remains motivated.

Thus this mean that if you have one fast rower you should fire him too, as he is useless to the ship ? ;P

I think it is more accurate to say that the Team members are the ones who plot the course, navigate the boat, steer it to the destination while overcoming any obstacles and extreme weather on the way. The manager is the one who thinks he is on a Train.

You forgot the misleading manager's indications.

If he is the only one, of course. He could end up wanting my manager place.

Problem with the roing methaphore is that it could equally fit a communistic ideal as a capitalist ideal, and thus wouldnt make much sence. Guess thats the problem with any methaphor as they could in essence be transformed into any parable that you wanted them to.

and these are the main reason to get in the way if the other members do not have the sufficient resistant to obey them.

But the boat you linked to pre-dates the Engine, and I refuse to believe the word 'Engineer' existed before the engine did, so that boat wouldn't have had an Engineer on board either.
You need to read more! Siege Engines have been around since Greek and Roman times. They were quite Ingenious. From the Latin Ingenium meaning Skill or Talent, and, as any fule no, Latin is a modern construct based upon Ancient Greek.

I refer you to the all knowing[^]and the second paragraph "deriving from the word engineer, which itself dates back to 1325, when an engine’er (literally, one who operates an engine) originally referred to “a constructor of military engines.” Anyone before 1325 was not called an Engineer.

The manage is the person who chooses one of the team members to blame if they do not reach safety. If they do get there then he stands on the podium and takes all the glory for himself whilst the team immediately start trying to make the new boat the manager has bought for the next journey able to go in the river despite it being totally unsuitable for that task.

Shirley he gets promoted to some made up position that allows him to eat more of the rations whilst not having to do any rowing. The sensible decisions would have been to simply chuck him over the side but as the river is full of piranhas (or lawyers as they're more usually called) the manager doesn't want to do that.
