Started my career just eight months ago.... And before I could realize my boss(project manager) has become my role model. It's now I am realizing that I have started working, the way I sit in office chair, the way I talk to colleagues/client, smoke, drink all like the way he does... Its pretty amazing I think...any views on it?

Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

That might be the case but chances are less as I don't get easily impressed ;P

It's a common pattern. There are two things to think about: 1) Do you really want to be a clone of your boss? Or do you want to do something else with your life. 2) If you can see it, then probably your workmates can as well. And they may see it more as brown-nosing.

I saw this happening in a team I worked in. The boss had certain speech patterns where he would punctuate his sentences with certain clicking sounds at the end of words. I found it really annoying and strange, as he would never speak like that outside of meetings. Unfortunately a number of people in the team then started picking up and using this speech pattern in meetings. When I caught myself doing this I felt really uncomfortable. There is nothing really amazing about this sort of behaviour, in fact it is very normal, as we seem to be group animals at heart and align ourselves through speech and behaviour patterns - read up on sociology if you want more information on this. The only tip I can give is to remember that you are not your boss, so try and keep some of your own individuality. I remember reading up on how Bill Gates had a habit in meetings of rocking in his chair(I don't know how true this was) - over time all the executives developed this habit and it was said that if you attended a Microsoft meeting where Gates was present you would find everyone rocking in their chairs. Try not to become a clone ;)

I suggest you choose a new role model. May I suggest that you try to imitate Darth Vader in meetings? If someone disagrees with you, see if you can force choke them?

Did you smoke and drink before you started this job? If not, then I suggest he is a bad role model as your life will undoubtedly be shorter as a result of picking up these habits. If you did, then please disregard the last sentence as you obviously have enough worries already.

I knew I wanted to go into development ever since I was in secondary school... what actually got me into computers / coding & development in general was a game called Subspace (Continuum) developed by Priit Kasesalu (also helped develop Skype). The game had the ability to create entirely different games within its 2d engine which let me experiment alot. Priit later helped develop the P2P software on Kazaa and later Skype. So I would say due to his involvement in Continuum (the remake of Virgin Interactives Subspace) I would say intially he was my role model as a developer.

It's not stolen Michael I just borrowed it? :) I guess I should have written "To be sung to the tune of Brown Girl In The Ring, by Boney M." below it. That would have made it clear to everybody. Cheers!

I guess I should have written "To be sung to the tune of Brown Girl In The Ring, by Boney M." below it. That would have made it clear to everybody.

I reckon it was better not stating the song, I'd love to know the tune others had in their head while they read it**

Can't view the link, blocked at work. Let me guess though, Brown Girl in the Ring? I fully knew that when I read his post.

                                      I love go-o-o-o-ld!
