I'd love to clutter up the Lounge and debate this with you, but ... I'm just too happy :-). Andy B
I started saving my urine the moment I heard the news. I'm hoping we can convert her grave into a man made lake...

Yep. Reduced the Income Tax they paid, brought in more health and safety for workers, ensured we were not frozen out of Markets by EU Regulations, increased competition for essential services resulting in lower bills/better service, broke the back of the over powerful unions so that people were free to work without having their wages docked by the Trots, increased employment, enabled more people to be home owners than at any time in history and encouraged and self-reliance and entrepreneurial society. The Girl Done Good. Better than the Smug Socialist Gifford you are lumped with.

With great sadness I have to let you know that the Greatest Prime Minister this country has ever had has died. RIP Margaret Thatcher. She served this country well and I am deeply saddened.

It's really a bit of a dirty trick putting a political statement like that in an RIP thread in the Lounge, where we can't really have a go at her or it. "Greatest" my arse and if you knew anything about the north or England, or Scotland or Wales – actually that's everywhere outside the comfortable south east where she centralised all the wealth, a problem we still haven't dealt with – you'd never say that.

Quote:
In keeping with the great lady's legacy, Margaret Thatcher's state funeral should be funded and managed by the private sector to offer the best value and choice for end users and other stakeholders. The undersigned believe that the legacy of the former PM deserves nothing less and that offering this unique opportunity is an ideal way to cut government expense and further prove the merits of liberalised economics Baroness Thatcher spearheaded.

She is at least a significant figure in British politics, but I also think she was highly overrated. To9 put it another way, I like Nelson Mandela and Abraham Lincon better ;)

You do know that the South pays for all the rest don't you? There has to be a capital city and London is it. If things were better in the North then they would have all the money. These places are hotbeds of the Trots and Unionism that destroyed this country in the 70's. Are you old enough to remember the Winter of Discontent? Crisis? What Crisis? as Jim Callaghan flew back in from his foreign holiday to be greeted with rubbish on the streets and bodies unburied. THAT is the legacy of socialism. How very caring the socialists were back then, condemning families to not being able to bury their dead. Instead of complaining about how unfair the North was treated, they should have been busier trying to improve it and making it work. It was the Labour Govt. of the 70's that destroyed more jobs than Thatcher did, and by the end she had created more than she destroyed. Facts, eh, don't you just find they get in the way of perceived political beliefs.

sorry but I am from the north and I remember the unions and power cuts and strikes ever five minutes because some one changed a fuse in a factory 200 miles away in an industry not connected with mine, if you think that tshe destropyed the unions then you obviously never suffereed because of those unions, the industry she killed were allready dead but were kept going with tax payer money, they could not have lasted long even if she had not stood up to unions that werew more concerend with power then thier own members
