Win 8, Two Monitors
-
Can someone tell me how to word the question to either Google, Bing, Yahoo, Code Project, Stack Exchange, or MSDN which leads to an explanation of how to arrange Windows 8 to allow multiple monitors. My basic questions are: Where do you click, what do you look for, what do you answer, and so on.
Try switching to the desktop view then right-click to bring up the properties for the display, which should look like what you'd see with W7? Marc

I think win-d works, or your start screen should have a tile called "desktop"

This is my first day with Windows 8. I pressed the Windows-C Key I clicked on "Devices" I see
Devices
Desktop
Nothing can be sent from the desktop
There is no second screen
If after click on "Devices" you don't see "Second Screen", then windows hasn't detected your second screen. How is your second monitor connected?

Gleaned from a number of posts here, you need training, I know that is pretty disgusting when discussing a version of a product you have been using for years but it seems the this new fangled stuff is just too far from the existing format to easily comprehend!

I just plugged my monitor in, and it worked. I had to go to Start Page > Type "Display" > Select Settings > Click 'Display Settings' > manipulate the settings there. Win 8 has built-in multi-monitor taskbar support, which I found quite surprising.

My BlogThe solution to all Win 8 problems seems to include switching to desktop view. I wonder why that is.

Leprechauns are smart compared to that buffoon at MS who coined Charms. Perhaps they were trying to make Win 8 sound cool like they try/do at Apple?

I do not know how to put an image here in code project (otherwise I would include screen caps) but from reading the several answers so far, it appears that Windows'8 can't see the second monitor. I know that that is bogus, because: When Windows 8 was first installed on this machine, both monitors produced the exact same image. I think they call it mirroring. When I right click on the desktop, and choose screen resolution there is only one screen available I just got on the floor and made certain that the plug is secure. It is. This is the exact same physical arrangement of machine and video card which worked fine with Windows 7. I repeat: upon installing Win'8, both screens were mirrors. Today, when I turn it off and turn it on, the second one is reporting "No Signal"

Tried that. Win'8 only sees the one monitor. When win'8 was first installed, both monitors produced the same image.

Did that. Only one monitor is available for settings. Win'8 can't see the second monitor. When Win'8 was first installed, the same image appeared on both screens at the same time. I am now unable to access the second screen.

My BlogThanks, did that, now I know one of the fifty thousand buzzwords and keystroke sequences of this version of windows until the next version comes out and makes this obsolete. When I switched to the desktop view, and right clicked on the screen background image, and chose screen resolution, windows'8 reports that I only have one monitor connected. The (blank, non-working) monitor is physically plugged into the same card as the working monitor. When Windows'8 was first installed on this computer, both monitors produced the same image. I am unaware of what setting I could have changed that caused the second monitor to no longer be recognized by windows'8, because when first installed, it did produce the imgae.

That would indicate that whatever driver is running the card is not detecting the second monitor. Again, please tell me how both your monitors are attached. If one to a card and one to the motherboard, then I suspect that that configuration is not supported. If both to one card, then it may be a problem with the card or the driver. If two separate cards, they may be conflicting with each other. It could also be that your card only supports one monitor at the resolution you've chosen. Try reinstalling the driver... WinKey-X (will bring up "eXpert menu") Device Manager Expand "Monitors" There should be two monitors listed here, if only one then the second is not recognized for some reason Right-click on one of the monitors, choose "Scan for hardware changes" Expand "Display Adapters" Right-click on the adapter, choose "Properties" click on "Driver" tab, choose "Update Driver..." Good luck

It should pick up the 2nd monitor automatically. Are both monitors on the same video card? Or are they on separate cards? If the latter, then perhaps the 2nd card was not detected properly.

Yes, correct, that is my problem. Windows'8 should pick up the 2nd monitor automatically, and it did that properly when first installed, but now it does not. Both monitors on the same video card. One is (I'm reading from the screen, what Windows'8 is telling me) A Dell 2007FP, Analog. The other is a Sony. When I turn him on, I see, "No Input Signal" and "Input 3-DVI-D" on the screen for a brief moment, after which the screen goes into power save mode. This did not happen when Windows'8 was first installed. Both monitors produced the same image. I am unaware of what setting I may have changed which is causing Windows'8 to believe that the second monitor does not exist. Can you suggest a reason for the monitor to work as a mirror when Windows'8 was first installed, but now does not even exist ?

Yes, that is the problem. Windows'8 did detect the second monitor when first installed. The monitor is now not detected. I have made no hardware changes of which I am aware.

They are attached to the same video card which is made for two monitors. This worked fine in win'7 This also worked when Win'8 was first installed on this machine. Something somewhere has to be different. I am not aware of any setting that I have changed. Should I try unplugging the monitor and reconnecting it ?
