What is sillier - to regret it or having it in the first place?

That's a hard call, Edo. But if you look at timeframes, deciding not to have it, and regretting that, is a shorter experience than regretting having it for a lifetime.

I guess each person will have to work that out for themselves as tattoos are personal. You seem to have reached your own conclusion? "I'm so glad I avoided having that tattoo

Depends on the subject. "Windows Vista RULEZZZ!!!" is probably one most people would regret, probably before they left the tattoo parlour. "Garry Glitter Forever" or "Jimmy Savile Is My Hero" would probably not be seen in the same light today. And any allegiance to a girlfriend / boyfriend / pop-band-of-the-minute may prove transitory. But good tattoos, done by a good artist can be phenomenal!

Tell that to the Maori and they will think you are racist.:) I have Tats, started getting them when I was in the Army (kinda traditional). Personally I do not mind them. I do, however, dislike overly tattooed ladies (Not the ladies themselves, I know many with tats and some are real fine!). I also think anyone who gets their faces tattooed (and who is not a Maori/[Insert South Sea Island Which Also Has Facial Tattoo Culture]) needs psychiatric help. Some of them are true works of art.

Note: I am tattooed, heavily... given modern laser removal that can be undertaken at relatively low cost and to great effect there is in fact no need to retain a tattoo which you subsequently regret. Almost any reputable and professional tattoo artist can and will recommend a equally reputable and professional source for laser removal of a tattoo so I'd suggest the only you should regret in the long term is the money wasted. Just a thought...

Years ago in the pub a girl we knew revealed her new tattoo on her thigh. My mates comment of "He did well to draw that on a wrinkled canvas" soon had it covered back up and the rest of us laughing too hard to contribute.

I don't dispute that, and on your first point if there's some cultural association then that's fair enough. What I personally dislike is the Jeremy Kyle generation where some unattractive ignorant idiot stains his skin on the belief if will somehow make him more interesting. Tattoo are often a sign of this sort of person, and I would admit to stereotyping people based on their tattoos. I can't help it. In the 90s it was very 'cool' to have the barbed-wire thing around you arm - started by Pamela Anderson maybe. Out of fashion these days. Then there was the thing on the small of a girls back (got into trouble with that one once). Don't know what the latest thing is....

Has the process improved recently? AFAIK laser removal is problematic if you have darker skin or lighter colored ink; and only works well with dark tats on fair skinned people.
