Godaddy is evil

I looked up a few domain names for a client earlier today on godaddy. I sent the client a .com address that was free. The client just tried to register that domain and low and behold it's already taken, by godaddy. Of all the chicken s&%t moves a registrar could do. If you're ever looking for a domain, avoid them like the plague.

If i remember right the .com domain is never free but the info is if you buy the com domain. Maybe you should try again.
I think he meant 'free' as if available, not as if priced at $0.00 :)

How do you know that it's registered by GoDaddy, and not via GoDaddy? may be someone else got lucky...

Yes, it sucks doesn't it. So many opportunists out there. I read recently of a facebook plugin (or similar, don't ask me, I don't use it) which monitored what you typed into your browser, and if the domain didn't exist would send that information back to some central place. Presumably, they can then build up a list of domains that don't exist but people expect to exist or would have accidentally end up there and register them. That's the trouble with the internet. It used to be nice when the computer world was just developers, but now the rest of the filthy world has its fingers in it.

I would rate that as highly unlikely. The domain was never registered before near as I can tell by looking up the domain history on Domaintools.com and a few other sites. Then within 4 hours of me looking it just happened to be snatched up by somebody else dumb enough to use godaddy? I'm skeptical.

I have used GoDaddy for years. The rare time I have to call for help they have bent over backwards to fix mistakes even when I have done them and I only have a simple hosting account. My heavy stuff is with rackspace. Now, Networks Solutions was actually guilty of what you describe. GoDaddy? Hopefully just bad luck.

I love capitalism, but this runs counter to that. We were going to buy the domain. And likely would have been foolish enough to do so through godaddy. However, we are not going to pay a ransom to godaddy for getting to it first. We are also shouting loudly about their crappy business practices that with luck may deter a few other people from using them.

I'm afraid it doesn't. It perfectly follows the definition of capitalism. If no-one wants something, sell it cheap. If someone wants it, put the price up. Supply and demand. You created the demand, so the price of the supply went up.

So the business plan is as follows: 1. Screw with potential customer. 2. Lose any chance of a sale. 3. ??? 4. Profit. The goal of capitalism is to make large piles of money that you can roll around naked on. They are not making dime one here so for us at least I'd still say this runs counter. But I suppose it is possible that other people put up with this scheme and buy the domains from them at a jacked up price.

Yes. I too have some experiences with GoDaddy. But unfortunately after buuying th eproduct. Cases are like this. 1) They cannot scan my site directory in case site is down due to infection. 2) They are billing my Credit card with out my notice for renewals etc. This is really lika a plaque.

It's also possible that godaddy had nothing to do with it. As someone else said, do a whois search on the domain and find out to who and how long it's been registered. It's also possible that godaddy publishes a list of domain searches to some kobs who then squat on the most searched domains and their various .TLD variants.

Right, you're the only one in 7 billion people to have that particular idea.

So yeah, I question the timing that none of the other 7 billion thought of using that domain until 4 hours after I first searched for it. At any rate we've picked another variation and are on our merry way.

Profit. It's capitalism at its best. - Know what people will pay, and charge them that, not what the product is worth. - Buy for as little as possible; sell for as much as possible. - Use whatever resources you have to maximise your own income. People never complain about money being taken from a sucker unless they're the sucker. It's why I'll never buy apple products; I refuse to be one of their suckers.
