I've played around with Celestia[^]. Might have what you need. If you want more stars, you can download plugins for it to add additional catalogs. It's free, and they have Windows, Mac, and Linux versions. Updates for it are few and far between, but it's certainly fun to tinker with.

Yes, it is actually a rather good program. Shows all the major (ie easy to see) satellites too. (I mean man-made ones, it shows all the natural ones, obviously, and when I say all I mean all that we know about. (This line comes courtesy of the Pedants' Society))
