Last someone asked me to that (though it was to be backward compatible to Win98) I pointed out that anyone too cheap too upgrade from 98 would be too cheap to buy our upgrade. I was right.

Why not? if it works for him. I know people who who are still driving their 1950's Ford truck. And they're happy with it. It works for them. Kinda crazy notion, huh? Yeah, yeah, I know.

I wasn't aware of that - thanks for the enlightenment. ... but C# is a manufacturer's language and suffers the same affliction of PL/1. COBOL is portable and native code and still wins the decimal battle, which is far more than a niche.

I still test my apps on IE6... Corporate apps.. Some people still have a fossil of a computer that belongs in a museum, with a 14" screen, a muddy keyboard with missing keys and oil stains... Sitting in a storage area, using software form 1990, and filling my forms daily, double clicking hyperlinks, 800x600, you get the picture... Still got some of those... In fact, if you take his computer away, and give him a new one with win 7 or 8, he'll complain. Typically, those people end up crashing and burning on newer systems, and you'll hear "My old (unpatched) win 2000 didn't crash like this." It doesn't have to be perfect on IE6, but it has to work.

Whatever turns your crank; however, don't expect us to support you when you run into problems! Our web development group will no longer answer questions regarding IE6 problems except with a note to update to a more recent browser such as Opera or Chrome. In a way we've never really supported IE...

COBOL is still active and popular because it supports decimal arithmetic natively (ie. without having to write classes or depend on libraries). Most commercial activities are plain old "read input, massage numbers, spit out result" instead of making lists or calculating a scientific result (which is more interesting to OOP and recent paradigms). Just about every day a new language is invented by somebody, but none of them address decimal arithmetic... which is why COBOL will live on for a long time. The only languages that I know of that currently support decimal arithmetic are assembler (pick your machine), PL/1 and COBOL. I think COBOL wins this one...

Totally agree with you H. In fact, I was trying to defend that position. Lots of big companies still runs BATs to run processes. I'm not surprised that lot of people still use IE6. Sometimes I feel pretty stupid when somebody asks why I'm still using VS 2008 and not 2012. I don't know, I feel confortable with 2008 and had no need to change to 2012. Besides, IE6 is faster than 9 or 10. Best regards, Fernando
