Web hosting with unlimited bandwith and unlimited space?

Hi, what is the secret behind the fact that many hosting companies offer unlimited space and bandwidth? By considering those features, why VPS, Cloud-Computing and much more exist?

They're lying. There are limits. Even if they don't place any artificial limits on you, there's only so much they could handle.

I think it was Steve Jobs who said "if your not paying for it, you are the product". Hosting companies will bombard their free users with upgrade commercials and what most of us would consider spam.

And those are the "good" set :~. The more usual scenario is that they'd sell on your email / phone / etc. to various spamming houses - which means you don't just receive spam from them X|.

Even if they don't have something hidden in their ToS to allow explicitly terminating your account for excess use (they almost certainly do); you're on a shared server with hundreds of other people so your maximum resource share is heavily limited anyway.
