Where To Go In and Around Virginia
-
My wife and I are scrounging a cheap holiday this year, by visiting my brother in Virginia, USA. Anyone know of any good places to visit, within reasonable travelling distance? We like walking, and mountains in preference to towns and cities, although we'll probably visit DC and NY. [Edit]Yep, sorry, we'll be going end of July and into August.[/Edit]

http://www.jvf.co.ukHere are some links. There is about 3ft of snow there now in Shenandoah NP (my favorite place). http://www.visitshenandoah.com/index.htm[^] http://www.virginia.org/[^]http://www.virginia.com/[^]
We the unwilling, being led by the unknowing, have been doing so much with so little for so long. We now attempt the impossible with nothing.

http://www.jvf.co.ukThe Shenandoah? valley is quite beautiful. There are numerous caves (Loray Caverns for one), lots of wild life, great trails, etc. The last time I was there (about 2 years ago), I came within 5 feet of many deer,20 feet of several bear, hiked to a waterfall, etc. You can canoo the river, etc. If you will be in VA in the summer, I would suggest a white water raft ride on the New River Gorge in West Virginia. That is quite fun. The Blue Ridge Parkway in southern VA is also very beautiful, though I enjoy it most in the fall months. Just a couple suggestions.

Thanks, I'll give them a look. My brother is snowed in at the moment, though we'll be there when it's about 80C or more at the end of July, and into August.

http://www.jvf.co.ukTry out Bath, W. VA. for a pleasant soak in a rare (in the East) hot spring, and a relaxing massage. The sign on the wall at the Inn there claims that George Washington slept there, but a similar sign exists in nearly every bed and breakfast in the state. Take that with a grain of salt. The Edgar Cayce Foundation in Virginia Beach is worth a look, too. There's an awesome library, and a great bookstore there; the town is a pleasant place to spend some time walking about, as well. In the off season I was able to negotiate a room on the beach for $10 a night, too.:-D It is ok for women not to like sports, so long as they nod in the right places and bring beers at the right times.
