To save you time in the future, here's the general formula: Q: Is X the new Y? A: No. You'll find this hold a vast majority of the time.

As you have to sign up to use it, no. It's certainly not my best source of knowledge. In fact, it fails the most basic test - you can't tell from the front page what it is, and without that knowledge, I'm not signing up. Whatever you think about Google, they got the search homepage right.

Even facebook needs sign-up , on the first page and the world is using it(i am sure you too).. Secondly, Quora wants you to learn by means of conversations so they have a reason for your sign up. At least, they are not selling your personal information like other social networks(They don't have a single ad).

But what does it do? Yes, Facebook has a sign in page, but that's a bit of a disaster as well. If it's learning by conversation, how is this any better than Code Project? I'm sorry to say, but this whole thread is coming across as very spammy. If you're not careful, people will start to wield the mighty spammer hammer.

Then they will fail. Look at the example of ExpertSexchange.com, they had the same model: "If you don't sign up, you don't get anything". And they pretty much universally reviled for it. They are in my personal Google search block list, so that any results from them never show... Any site which wants me to sign up to find out what they do will do whatever it is without me.

No they will not! They are following the same strategy as facebook. They are first concentrating on user base. As said by their CEO-"We don't know what the thing is yet"! and he is former CTO of facebook. And once they achieve 1/2 a billion people, they will start generating revenue from it. So they are planning for the next big thing, as they see the site is spreading viraly. This reminds me the words of JT in the movie social network--

No, because search engines aren't a waste of time, and you can't replace them with something that is.
