Does anyone here have any experience of elance.com ? I'm considering signing up to try and get some remote coding piece work. I won't of course unless I get a recommendation from someone who's done it. The fact I hadn't heard of it until today doesn't bode well but I guess it could be relatively new?

I spent several months trying to pick up small jobs on it. I'm a pretty good programmer, and I couldn't get a single one. The competition just pasted their formatted HTML into the bid box, and set a really low price without thinking about the job what so ever. I've never hired anyone on elance, but I can see me getting 100 bids, and having to read every single one to figure out who to hire. Most people put a secret phrase in the job, that you have to type in to confirm that you read the job description. I suspect that the majority of underwater people here on CP are elance workers looking for help on their jobs. I canceled my membership last week, because I found it impossible to bid on vague job descriptions, and I wouldn't hire anyone there.

Interesting. I didn't go that far into it. The web site was very lite on any explanatory detail and did rather smack of having just been set up. Perhaps not quite set up yet would have been a better assessment. I don't think I'll sign up to be the ginea pig or the hamster they clearly need although I like the idea if they can make it work.

It was depressing looking through the jobs. Most were $10-$15 /hr or less. Marc

Thanks, that's very valuable feedback. I won't be wasting my time with it on that basis. A pity they couldn't figure out a way to filter the dross.

Not sure how it goes in the UK, but many consulting companies in the US offer part time work (they take a % of the hourly rate). Usually, they also help with finding work.

Yep, I've hired about 6 different people/companies on it for graphics design/3d model design jobs. I'm working on a game at the moment and put out the graphics completely sending off cartoons I found on the web as starting points, and they developed 3d models and animated them for me. It's excellent - I would not have been able to do the things I've done without it. There are others - odesk(?) I think is one. The important thing is to spend a while going through people's portfolios. I do all the coding myself so can't vouch for that, but I do have a friend which who paid $2000 to have his iPhone app idea developed, and it went on to sell over 2.5 million copies, so again I think he'd be pleased he elanced! As a tip, don't offer above the $500 mark for your orginal job spec. Different currencies mean things can done spectacularly cheaply in comparison to what you'd pay at home.

You are competing globally, that's probably middle class in some countries.

Yes we have the same in the UK although not so much for part time work mainly full time. I'm signed up with an good agency but unfortunately 'work in the UK' is becoming an oxymoron.

So it looks like it works reasonably well from an employers point of view but perhaps not from the employee side I'd be looking at for now.

I'd take that if it's a job I can do in a day, I don't live in London so $500 is a reasonable day rate :)

Duh, sorry, got the wrong end of the stick. In which case I'd say you'll find yourself up against some cheap competition so it might not be great. That said some people prefer hiring in the same country so who knows.

Yes, thought provoking isn't it? I also have lots of friends who've created some sort of app but failed to make back the $99 (or whatever it is) developer fee - a slightly more probable outcome I suspect.

Since you guys are looking for work: I've got a website I need made to handle this thing where I market these things to people that need them and the system has to keep track of it and I'll need some reports - oh, and the regulations have to be met and all that - plus my accounting people need a tool. How much will that cost? :)

I'll be glad to quote it, But I need some more information on the tracking, reports, accounting tool and how many pages it would take to properly market the item. You can private message me on the details, and we will do our best to properly market anything you offer, and we don't get emotional or political about the item or services offered. Would be nice to know what it is, so I can determine the level of saturation currently in the market. Saturated items and services require more work to bring them to the top in search results. jkirkerx http://www.redcopper-online-marketing.com

Since you guys are looking for work: I've got a website I need made to handle this thing where I market these things to people that need them and the system has to keep track of it and I'll need some reports - oh, and the regulations have to be met and all that - plus my accounting people need a tool. How much will that cost? :)
