I don't use either glasses or contacts so you may want to ignore my post and move on to more worthwhile things. Go for what looks good on you.

Woo hoo! I found an old pair of prescription glasses I had when I was at school. Hardly fashion items, and they too broke and have long ago been fixed with the aid of a piece of bent coat hanger, but at least I can see again! They are ok for close up sight like using the computer, but walking around the house makes me dizzy they are so weak. - David, 75% happier than ten minutes ago. :| Ok, so to make this thread worthwhile for other people (;)) what should I do - get new glasses or go for contacts? I haven't had contacts before and am not sure how they work or feel (I heard they are like wearing a condom, but when I tried putting a condom in my eye to try it just stung). Can you offer any suggestions? :~

LASIK? (i'd go with glasses, just 'cause they provide some protection for your eyes in addition to correcting your vision... but then again, i'm not the one having to wear the things, so whatever is more comfortable / convenient for you)

“Who’s there? I heard you! Step out so I can see you!” I’m operating half blind now; I managed to break my only pair of glasses. One of the legs fell off and I couldn’t find the screw, and just now the damned lense popped out and stripped the other little screw holding that in (I applied a bit too much force it seems when I was taping the leg back on and stressed the frame too much. They have fallen apart! :(( Now I am a very short sighted person and I cannot clearly see this text I’m typing even if I lean as close as six inches without a lot of hard focusing - and I’ve lowered my desktop to 1024 x 768 too, the absolute minimum that I can still use Visual Studio at. I’m going to have to ring the local Specsavers in the morning and see if they can make me up a pair using my prescription records, or at the very least slot me in for a quick eye test ASAP. I can’t do anything without my glasses. :(( In a moment – don’t laugh – I’m gong to try sticky taping the lenses over the frames on my old sunglasses. I can remove the tinted lenses if I can find my screwdriver set (they aren’t prescription sadly). Anyway, coming from the large optical background, the use of wire or papper clips is highly recomended and works very well to replace a stripped screw until you can get tothe store to get a nut and bolt put on. Som eplaces will not retap the hole for fear of weakening the metal of the barrel.

That sucks man. The last time I broke my glasses, I was driving home from work. I stopped at the end of the driveway where I worked and tried cleaning them and they broke in half. I knew I couldn't drive without them so, with much difficulty, I parked my car and got a ride home. In the UK there is a company, Specsavers, they are very competively priced an you get a free pair of glasses. If you are like me you have so many of the free glasses they get everywhere, and I always have an old spare pair in the car. If mine get broken I can't read the road signs, even the ones on the Motorway! Only having one pair does sound like the M$ approach, why have a backup our systems never crash!

The frames are far too small for my lenses though, so I’m going to look like the token geeky kid at a computer fair for the next couple of days. :(( Why does this always happen at the most inconvenient of times?!   [ edit ] And to top it all off, the real icing on the cake, I can't find my damned sunglasses! :(

You can thank Microsoft Word's spell checker for that. After ten minutes of strugling to read the text in Internet Explorer I just copied it all to Word and zoomed in so I could read (and write) it comfortably.
