Beaufort, Port Royal area. My sons in the USMC and bought a house and it needs a lot of work so I'm going to be the live in maintenance man. If you live in the area I'm an avid hiker, backpacker, camper, biker and kayaker if you have any favorite spots to share I'd be much obliged.

how much junk a person can collect in 9 years living in the same place. Longest I've ever lived anywhere and I've thrown away so much junk it amazes me. I'm preparing for a move in a couple of weeks from Florida to S. Carolina and trying to trim the fat so to speak. God I hate moving!

I know, I just bought a personal watercraft and now I have to buy a truck to tow it. If you have anything good to give away let me know. (Why anyone would leave Florida for S. Carolina is beyond me, however)

I've lived here 26 years and when I first got here it was a great place but over the years the cost of living has gone up, there's 5 times as many people, etc.. There used to be places at the beach where you could go in the evening and listen to a live band, eat dinner and drink a cold beer and just relax, it's now been replaced by condos and a high end restaurant. All the places to go and have fun are gone! Memorial day weekend they had a big deal at the beach and there was a gang fight so now no one wants to go to the beach, there ain't shit to do there anyway and the attitude of the snobs at the beach is come spend your money then get the hell out. Sometimes paradise is not what it seems.

More often, I think, paradise moves and leaves no forwarding address. Before CA became a Peoples' Republic, we used to drive to the beach, park on the sand, light a campfire 100' from the water and spend the night fishing and drinking. Try any of these things today and you'll go to prison.

Exactly, you hit it right on the head. FL is following in the foot steps of CA and I hate what they've become. We also used to have fun at the beach but in the last 10 years I've been out there maybe 15 times and probably 12 of those was because someone from out of town wanted to see the beach. I used to swim out there a lot but the thing that clinched it for me is when they found hypodermic needles floating in the polluted water.

Half-way between the beach and the mountains, close to a big city, but still in the country (35 undeveloped acres directly behind us). The kids can go outside and play without us worrying about it. Surrounded by trees, so don't use a lot of air conditioning.

I couldn't agree more: CA is not at all what it used to be: upon my return it's like living in a socialist paradise without any of the paradise. The odd time we hit the beach we end up leaving after a short while because there are too many people and they all make a lot of noise: no chance of relaxing with that! Pity: like you say, used to be great. Where were you in Florida? I really like Naples and that side (though only vacationed, never lived there).

On a smaller scale I just changed office locations after 10 years, just down the hall. There was a bit of stuff to move, but I'm glad I kept my cardinal rule since I was a contractor. "Never keep more in your office than you can take out the front door with you in 2 shopping bags." Much of the other stuff belonged to my employer. What was cool was I found a Token Ring to "RJ-45" cat 5 adapter. The network tech across the hall wanted to to frame and put on his wall.

9 years? Bliss! At a rough count, there may be more from my early childhood, I've had 16 homes in my near 46 years. The longest single stay was the family home from 71-85. Admittedly I have kept three of the four homes I've bought, so including my parents' house I've only had to fully move out of 12. The last 4 big moves have all been twix Hungary and Britain. I do not want to do that again.

I used to move around a lot when I was younger so the stability these last 9 years has been great.

It's going to be chaos for a while because the first couple of days I've got to paint the while interior of the house. The previous owners like bold colors; blues, reds, etc and we want earth tones, plus they didn't know how to paint so lets just say it's going to be a challenge.

paint over with a cheap thick layer of white before starting anything else. That should make the job easier.
