OK, so, I am a metalhead. I think most people know that. I play guitar, and am in a cover band, I also write my own songs. I'm forever trying to expand as a player, and so, while I hate country music, when Guitar Techniques magazine started a country column a year or so ago, I'd listen to the CD, and like what I heard, and so I started to learn to play it. I certainly wanted to be better at soloing over a major chord. Only, country is more than that. It's actually very jazzy, in the sense that instead of playing one scale, as rock often does, country players follow the chords a lot and use a lot of chromatics. I also love John 5, who plays for Rob Zombie, but plays country licks in his on stage solo. There's some amazing country picking on his solo CDs. Well, now I find myself buying CDs by Rascal Flatts ( in response to a Guitar World story ) and Brad Paisley ( he was also on Guitar Word, but I'd already heard him play on a ZZ Top covers CD and the latest from John Fogerty ). Should I call a doctor ? Have I become infected ?

Maaaaate! Music is music - don't put it in a box. Be catholic in your listening and playing, and be the better for it.

You are what I was in every way you described. There is no hope for you now. Go buy that tele (with single coils) and enjoy your stay. Oh and prepare to be humbled as I too was a JCM-800 blaring dude with a Paul and was pretty hot if allowed to do lead over rock. Those guys in Country for decades have been playing better than we but we could now hear it. Maybe except for Malmsteen. Welcome to the corn field dude. CountryNewbie +=1; :Ron

I agree, and it's precisely that attitude that had me walking this path, it's just that I did not expect it to lead where it did :)

Actually, I have one, and another with humbuckers ( the only way I could get a lefty thinline ). I love it, it's a very honest guitar.

Honestly, given they play with a clean sound, they probably shred BETTER than most rock dudes.

Exactly my thought... The most excitement and danger anyone ever experienced in Nashville was the night that some fool suggested that there might be a need for a fourth chord in country music; mayhem ensued...

            Will Rogers never met me.

Yeah, I understand. I am a metalhead too, loved the music since 1983 myself. As I've gotten older I've begun to like other types of stuff too. Now I say, I like everything from Garth Brooks to Metallica. Anyway, a while back, I heard of these guys. You should check them out. HILARIOUS... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hayseed_Dixie[^]

I hate the 'vanilla' country I've heard in the past, and probably the caricatures of country I've seen in places like the Blues Brothers :-) I'd never heard country that had smoking lead guitar in it. I still am not fond of the vocal stylings in a lot of country, the style of singing does grate on me. For that reason, people like John 5 and Johnny Hiland acted as my gateway drugs, because there's no singing on them.

Playing it has certainly shot my guitar playing in the arm, I have been learning mostly country lead for a while now and just loving it.

Someone that's really good at picking (banjo) - and quite untipped too - is the actor Steve Martin!
