Google goes loony

http://www.google.com/loon/[^] I suppose only Google could pull off something crazy like this. However my first thought on seeing this in the news was, people in far-off regions are probably better off without internet. Second thought was, free prawn worldwide (I mean, how many people are going to look at pictures of cats? Seriously!). I'm really turning into a cynical old c**t :sigh: .

Personally think it's a fantastic idea. But I think the balloons would work better closer to home.
If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.-John Q. Adams
You must accept one of two basic premises: Either we are alone in the universe, or we are not alone in the universe. And either way, the implications are staggering.-Wernher von Braun
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.-Albert Einstein -

I think it's a very good idea (if you can keep the balloons away from flight paths, airports, powerful telescopes and so forth). Think of it this way: They are going to be relatively difficult to shoot down, and can't be disconnected to hide what a repressive government is doing in the same way that a land-based connection can. Plus, free wifi that works outside my garden? Brilliant! There are downsides, yes. But I'm sure there are ways around them.

I think it is a good idea as well. I looked a bit further into it, and it is a paid service. The balloons will travel at a height twice that of airplane flight patterns. However they will still need to coordinate with the FAA and other authorities when they send the balloons up, and bring them down. For now, they are targetting rural locations, to bring more users into the internet. 2.2B have broadband access, 4.8B do not. More potential advertising revenue for Google. Oh yeah, this was another idea dreamt up by the guy that created Google Glass.
Software Engineering is different from the traditional forms of engineering that are bound by the laws of physics. Software Engineering is only bound by the laws of stupidity.

It might be a late April fools joke

So finally, free internet in cross-country flights seems a possibility :)
