Without starting a flame war or bashing session... What is the first language you learned: verbal and coding Do you still use either on a regular basis? Why or why not? Canadian English and Commodore BASIC Living in the Southern U.S., I still speak English, but, admittedly, it has been... adjusted to use local terms (Y'all, All y'all, you'n's). I still use BASIC variants (VBA mostly in Excel or third party applications), but haven't used any Commodore products since about the late '90s.

Brummie English and Algol60. Actually I'd done some programming on whatever language WITCH used when I was at Wolverhampton CAT in '65 but that may not count. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harwell_computer[^]

Probably something new here: My first verbal language was Swiss-German (and it still is). I'm also pretty good at English and use it for pretty much anything related to my developer activities. The first programming language I really knew was PL/1 on z/OS. That was 2008. Thanks to the Swiss educational system and the company I took my apprenticeship, I could work on Mainframes for two and a half years. I also got to know a little COBOL, C and REXX. In the second half of this apprenticeship i got to know Java and then C# which I'm using on a daily basis now. Lately though, we're also using a lot of JavaScript.

Malay and a BASIC variant [no idea which] The Malay was because as a baby we had a Malay Nanny and I spent more time with her than anyone so my first words were Malay. No, I cannot remember a single word of it now. :-D BASIC is still there, but I try not to use. I do do a bit of VB work, but never by choice.

Is there any point to this question? (given 90% responding with English and BASIC)

Spanish and 68000 Assembler and C. My first project was for the Commodore Amiga 1000, using C, Assembler and AmigaBasic. I am not sure which one was my first programming language.

Italian and Pascal. I don't use Pascal anymore (currently I use C#, Java and C++ depending on the project), and slowly I'm abandoning Italian language too, since I moved from Italy to the UK.

English and NwScript[^] If nwscript doesn't count, then I would have to say c++, vb.net, and javascript... because I took them all my first semester at college.

Let's see: Canadian English and I believe it was Fortran in high school for the first computer language. Don't think I ever used it after that though. Prefer coding in C# these days. mvarey

American English and HP BASIC. Yes and no. Mostly using C, C++ now, with a smattering of others thrown in for entertainment :)

Belgian Dutch and Pascal (and a tiny bit of HyperTalk at that time, if anyone remembers that) Later I learned a bit of Visual Basic, VBScript, Perl and Java (never used those much though). These days I use C#, Javascript and PHP (with C# my favourite language). I still speak Dutch and that will probably never change.

Agreed, HTML is not a programming language. It is a markup language, used in the wonderful world of computers to display something using in a particular way with markup codes. Welcome to the discussion.

US English (northern midwest dialect) and BASIC on the old TRS-80.
