On the subject of having courage in the face of danger, I always found this quotation from the great writer Frank Herbert to be of great value: I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total oblivion. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me and turn my inner eye to follow its path. When the fear is gone, only I will remain. --The Litany Against Fear (Frank Herbert, -Dune-, 1965) Any other suggestions from our great collection of coders?

Cornelius Henning Failure is not an option - It is a rare privilege reserved for the few among us who have the guts to try. And: Anyone can hold the helm when the sea is calm. -- Publilius Syrus

Accept that pain is only transitory: and that you have survived all the pain you have had thrown at you so far, so how much worse can it get? (Unless you haven't had a frozen shoulder yet in which case the answer is "a lot") Physical pain, emotional pain, mental pain, the embarrassment of looking like an idiot - they don't last forever, so you can get over them. Why not do it now? Once the prospect of pain no longer worries you you are free to make choices - which can them minimize the pain to come. If the prospect of pain rules you, you cannot make a decision, and you are useless to yourself. That is panic. Having said that, I'm terrified of spiders.

Let's see. "quite jolly" relates to "ill tempered." Don't think no one notices you did not correct the "prone to violence" claim. Stay off the 405! ;P

I generally just ignore it. Unlike problems in the physical realm, it does actually disappear if you ignore it long enough. :-D

My wife and I faced our greatest fear. We came through it as changed people. Funnily enough, we no longer fear things.

I was brought up to respect my elders. I don't respect many people nowadays.

I find that running around screaming like a little girl helps me but of course that doesn't work for everyone. :)

I fear spiders. Yes, I know it's stupid. Obvious Suggestion: remove the object of your fear. Not always applicable, obviously.

I'd disagree with you, but you seem aggressive and ill tempered. Fearing the consequences, I now choose to remain silent.

Loosely paraphrased from the original quotation?: Kill them all, God will recognize his own. --Amalric Arnaud, during the seige of Be'ziers (1209 AD), addressing soldiers who asked him how to tell the difference between the heretics and the orthodox Catholics.

I'm not sure you can call it a quote, it was the mind settling chant of the benne gesserit (spelling has got to be off, I have not read a dune book for ages) and part of the books.

You know, you are probably right. It may not be verbatim from the book. I actually saw this quoted several decades ago posted as a quote from the book and it prompted me to read the book - three times! I could never actually find the quote in the book, but that did not diminish the intense pleasure of staring into the great mind of Herbert at work. If only I had that man's imagination and writing skills. Aaah well, the neurons are getting rusty. Maybe I can shake them loose by banging my head a few times. Of course it will help a lot if I could first lubricate them with some of Nagy's g&t. Got a bottle to spare an old man, Nagy?
