Downvoting
-
I use to find it helped me realise what was acceptable and unacceptable. One of my old posts would attract say 3x upvotes and 15x downvotes. I would look at this and say, OK, perhaps I overstepped the mark there, some people found it funny but most were appalled, and then I would think twice before posting similar subject matter. Now that same post will attract just 3x upvotes and I'm none the wiser that 15 people didn't like it. I think because of this newbies are not going to be educated this way and will post stuff that nobody particularly likes, but will have no way of knowing. I think the Swiss weather forecasts are a good example of threads that would have been downvoted in the past, and thus educating the poster.
You could assume that 5 times as many people disliked your post as liked it (figures based on previous voting patterns) it works for Mori afterall

No, I am not calling for a return of it, although that is tempting many times. I was actually against removing it at first but have come to see that I don't miss it at all. I think it was a good idea to remove it. :)

True. However, you can assume there are always people that don't like it. :)

I like them. Well, mostly because I am swiss. Now however, feel free to talk to the author instead of hiding behind a downvote. From this point of view the removal of the downvoting did something good: We are forced to talk to each other. Wait, we are developers - Nevermind.

The downside is that you learned to stop posting about your obsession with Mary Poppins. It wasn't appalling as much as it was kind of sad.

Exactly, the poster will get 1 up-vote from you, and maybe 5 down-votes from others, showing that overall it wasn't appreciated. Now he will get just one upvote from you.

It's not hiding, it's educating. Downvotes never bothered me but if I got a lot on one message I would try to take that into account in future. I have already told the author it didn't interest me and did that anyway before downvoting was removed. Please don't be offended by my choice of example. It was the latest post that met the criteria, there were plenty others I could have chose. And besides it's only my guess it would have attracted downvotes.

Yeah but down voting let you voice an opinion so to speak. 5 - Yeah right on 4 - You have a point 3 - You have a point just not the right one 2 - Are you elephanting crazy 1 - You're a total douche

1-5 voting was much better than what we have now. I don't understand why we have to be treated like children. Downvoted posts showed up grey so you could see what wasn't worth your time, too. Some things are bad enough they should be reported as abuse, but some posts were just vapid and deserved a 1 or 2 without actually being bad enough that I want to see them summarily removed.

I'm pretty sure it was removed because it was being used by children. :) There are so many waste of time posts on here, in my opinion. What people had for lunch, what they're going to do later. It makes it feel like twitter and facebook. I hate that. Some people like it though.

As this is the internet, and CP is coming up on 10,000,000 users, I would imagine that 15 people not liking something is a given. You shouldn't really change your habits until an appreciable minority is offendend. Let's be generous and put that at 0.1%, meaning you can do as you please until you get 10,000 downvotes. :-D
