Never saw that such a big city goes bankrupt. http://money.cnn.com/2013/07/18/news/economy/detroit-bankruptcy/index.html?hpt=hp_t3[^] Next one? the whole US, southern Europe, and more to come. I am just happy to be in solid Switzerland (still rated AAA by most agencies).

Oh yes, now it is clear. And it's still going on (also here you feel it, specially in banks, I am working for one of them and got no salary increase in 5 years :(. We are still recruiting, so. )

Bankruptcy in these circumstances isn't the same as when a company or individual goes bankrupt; It's just a way of moving money around. i.e. the money is moved from ordinary people's pensions to pay for all the extravagances of the people running the city (into the ground).

Thanks, finally few errands to do today then depart around 5 tonight. Woking - Folkstone - Calais - Brussels - Koln - Passau - Lintz - Vien - Gyor - Balatonfured In all it's a tad over 1,200 miles. We'll stay in Brussels tonight and with an early start and good tail wind will get home 7-8pm Saturday. Then it's 5 weeks of R&R; with a small amount of gin for my stomach's sake.

Sounds great! Just know that there will be millions of other cars travelling, there was already an accident at 4.30 am this morning which caused the closure of the main Alp tunnel, the Saint Gotthard, building traffic jams in both directions at that time in the night. I still have to wait until end of August and then I fly to Amsterdam (other way round...). ;)

What really caught my attention is the 70,000 abandoned properties.

Well, of course not. Sure, they have the same names, are run by the same people and still make the same "predictions", but other than those small details they're completely different! Also, by insinuating that they haven't changed you're scaring the confidence fairy. I'll blame you if our interest rates go up today.

Detroit's population is down by about 2/3rds from its peak; it's tax base is probably down even more since at it's peak the US car makers had almost the entire US auto market.

There is a great deal wrong with that simplistic statement.
