Elite athletes

Some ethiopian guy just broke the world record time for 2 miles (3.218 km). He ran it on 8m4.69s. That's an average speed of 23.9 kph (~ 14.9 mph) :omg: In that time I could probably run 2.1 - 2.2 km (1.3 mi). He'd be a friggin kilometer ahead of me! :(( When you see them run on the TV it doesn't look like they're running very fast. But when you do the same thing and compare the figures, you are stunned. :omg: I'm in awe of all elite athletes. -- Shine like a mirror reflecting, like the sun shines. Ahh, good. An athletics fan. Please can you explain your fascination with athletics? Is it the "sports" they play or simply the athletes themselves? I don't get it.

It's their sacrifices and accomplishments that fascinates me. The best way to understand the fascination is to do the same thing for a year. I've been running pretty much every week now for a year. I've gotten better every week. I've put a lot of effort into it, mainly because I want to get fit, and because I, believe it or not, enjoy running. After this whole year of running, I'm still not even close to these guys. If they ran alongside of me, they would probably not even break a sweat! Then you begin to understand the sacrifices and accomplishments of these athletes. It's a feeling of pure awe. I'm not only fascinated by athletes, brainy scientists fascinate me too. But it's easier for me to be fascinated by athletes since I'm practicing the same activities and thus I sort of understand the problem(s). -- Shine like a mirror reflecting, like the sun shines. Think about the elite marathoners. They average 5:00-5:10 minute miles, for 26.2 miles. My fastest single mile is in the 6:30-7:00 minute range, and there's no way I could string together 26.2 of them.

I am not much of a runner, but when I do I am more long distance than sprints. I do understand the joy of it, mainly from the runners high and sense of achievement. They can run, jump, bat, bowl, catch, pass, tackle, kick, smash, volley, serve and score. It is not the team side though because my favourite sport to play is Tennis and then in singles matches. Doubles can be fun, but I don't enjoy letting a partner down or having a dead serious partner. I get dead bored watching some chaps running around a track for how ever long. Or spending 10 seconds running like maniacs and then nothing. Or throwing a spear, and then nothing. Cross country ski-ing is nice because they ski and shoot with both long distance sections and sprints, quite interesting. And I feel the achievement of someone in a team helping the team to a pinaccle is more of an achievment than perfecting the running 100 metres. My spelling is another example of my state. Just a jack, not a master. :-D

Marathon runners just blow my mind away. Add 180 km biking and 4 km swimming, and you've got Iron Man. Those people STILL outrun me. :-D I'm determined to run a marathon before the age of 30. I think I'll be able to pull it off if I keep a speed of ~10 km/h (6 mi/h), maybe less. I'm still not sure what'll happen at the 18.5 mile mark. When I do half marathons I average around 11 km/h, maybe faster depending on slopes etc. -- Shine like a mirror reflecting, like the sun shines. I don't know the english name for it.. Track and field? *shrug* I too like sports where various disciplines are needed. Ice hockey is probably my all time favorite. :) -- Shine like a mirror reflecting, like the sun shines. Something that comes from above, when all that remains falls below.

My girlfriend (and wife come April 5th!) is a pro triathlete. When we do triathlons Olympic distance triathlons (1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run) she beats me by about 20 minutes!!! I'd be excited if I could narrow the gap to 15 minutes this year!

5 minutes on that level is a lot.. I wish you good luck! -- Shine like a mirror reflecting, like the sun shines. Something that comes from above, when all that remains falls below.

I wonder how long it would take for anyone to notice.:-D It is ok for women not to like sports, so long as they nod in the right places and bring beers at the right times.
