We have the LAN which is locked down and / or monitored to within an inch of its life. Then there is wi-fi,I have no idea how restricted that is because I am not allowed to use it. Presumably they have a wi-fi that allows you onto the corporate network and one that only allows you access to the outside world.

Yep that's true but even the corporate network Wi-Fi is not restricted. then what's the point of giving another Wi-Fi ?

do you guys get a different Wi-Fi at work for personal use. Here at my company they provide two Wi-Fi. one for office use (all though no websites are block apart from some porn website) and still they have provided a different Wi-Fi for personal work. I wonder why ?

When I got my new phone my colleague gave me his wi-fi user/password. Seems to be well known from all but security... I needed it because of the yet missing SIM card. Now I still have and he never changes PW. Really slow so. 3G is faster. Sites on Wi-fi are not the same then the Terminal Servers for Internet (Youtube not blocked for instance)

If you bring down the personal-use WiFi by surfing dodgy Korean hacker sites you loose your job. If you bring down the corporate WiFi by surfing dodgy Korean hacker sites just as the CEO is using it for a big demo, the IT manager looses his job.

I do the same at home - my router supports a guest network, which I have set up for friends and family - they can get internet access from their prhones/pads etc, but cannout access my network resources and so cannot find my "art" collection!

It's well known that if all the cat videos and porn disappeared from the internet there would be only one site left and it would be called whereareallthecatvideosandporn.com

We have a guest wi-fi here at work that we are allowed for personal use. But the internet working policy applies to it and we (our network admin) also changes the password once a month so that we can keep track on the devices using it

We have a LAN that is completely disconnected from the internet except for an email gateway at Head Office (one email gateway for the entire global company - 140 countries - all completely disconnected except for that one gateway). There is no WiFi for this network. We have an internet network, also. This has WiFi. This is used by internal internet machines and BYOD. Many people have two PC's, an internal and an internet. Really fun explaining to software vendors, when they come in with their latest and greatest cloud based offerings. No thanks, We keep it internal.

for us it doesn't. its free access to all the websites (including P2P). And although its password protected but admin has never changed the password.

Sounds like it is pretty restricted then. :)

Perhaps it would be better to offer dial-up for personal use. That way you don't even need to monitor it.

Because they found that they had two boxes available, and, well, they couldn't just let one sit there doing nothing, could they?
