Well, at least for all of our members living / our currently staying here in Switzerland. For those who don't know, a legend says this country was founded August the 1st, 1291, pretty long time ago. We are celebrating this date with a day off, brunches, BBQs and expensive fireworks in the night (we have to pay taxes for something...) Posted this today because tomorrow like the majority of fellow Swiss guys won't be online, or just a very short period of time. ;) modified for clarification

It's also Yorkshire Day - the done thing for a Yorkshireman living in Switzerland is to bellow On Ilkla Moor bar't'at at the top of your voice from the balcony.

The French gave us the French Kiss[^] I Glasgow you could get a Glasgow Kiss[^] An Eskimo would give you an Eskimo Kiss[^] Any of these are preferable to a Swiss Kiss (No link as it is entirely awful unless performed by two girls)

That doesn't have any historical meaning, though, does it? I think they (Yorkshire Forward or some group like that) just picked a day because they thought we ought to have a celebration of Yorkshire.

                        Not at all.

                        Quote:

It was celebrated in 1975, by the Yorkshire Ridings Society, initially in Beverley, as "protest movement against the Local Government re-organisation of 1974", The date alludes to the Battle of Minden, and also the anniversary of the emancipation of slaves in the British Empire in 1834, for which a Yorkshire MP, William Wilberforce, had campaigned
