Firefly

Just finished watching all of the episodes of Firefly. Excellent: a travesty that it was cancelled. Also watched Serenity(the movie) which is even better before watching the series so will watch it again later as memory is telling me that it is confusing and contradictory. Anyway, well worth watching. Could be slow at times but, imho, best sci-fi series. Ever. Apart from Star Trek, of course. :-)

Yes, they apparently put it in a bad time slot and nobody knew about it. Then again, the networks put so much crap that TV is hardly worth watching. would not say its the best SciFi, Battlestar Galactica is by far the best. Still it had pretty good entertainment value.

I wonder if we remember Firefly so fondly is because they produced so few episodes and therefore did not run out of ideas. I'm currently working my way through Farscape, another that closed prematurely IMHO. B5 was excellent until it went entirely weird, I might watch DS9 again as I never did get to see the last season of that.

Of course, the old one was nothing particularly impressive. Anyone watching it today would be totally unimpressed. All goodie goodie.

I think it's more because Joss Whedon is one of the few people in the US entertainments field who can write genuine characters, keep those characters in character, and give them stupendously appropriate dialogue. A shining (and higher profile) example of his great skills that everyone seems to miss is in the Avengers movie, when it's discovered that Hulkie has to be removed pronto-ish from the SHIELD ship. Everyone is too busy bitching and sniping at each other that they don't get around to doing what needs to be done. How many meetings have you attended that worked exactly like that? And he wrote it perfectly; not a word out of place. Give the same situation to one of the idiots who insinuate themselves into all such movies/TV series (yes, I'm looking at you, Jeph Loeb) and you end up with a pile of sh1te.

I quite liked B5 but not a patch on this. Wins on dialogue, characters, plot and effects and there were so few episodes (14). Had it gone on...

Although I thoroughly enjoyed B5, I liked Farscape betterer.
