The best toy I ever had was a Meccano set (Number 6). Using it you really learned mechanics, while building your own toys at the same time. I'm sad to learn that Meccano isn't around in the same way as it used to be. So while planning away what to buy for my kids in the future I'm wondering what was/is the best toys you ever had?

Anything I could use to build or create something with: lego, meccano, chemistry set, airfix/aurora and the like. My dad helped me to build a simple tool kit so I could learn to take things apart, and make things and get comfortable around tools and machines, etc, etc. No way to pick a favorite; they all did something for me.

That would either be my C64 or my old Transformers. I could multi-task and play with the Transformers while waiting for the C64 to load something.

If I had to pick just one, it would be the American Basic Science Club series my folks got me at great expense in its time. I doubt you could even create such a thing today, with all the lawyers working so hard to prevent kids from learning anything. Even if it was possible to create again, I doubt anyone could afford it today. But among other choices, a microscope, a chemistry set, a telescope, a Tonka 9-piece construction set (the steel ones, not plastic), the original Erector Set with the heavy duty 120V ac motor with gearbox - all were excellent toys. Also fun, but not a toy, was my Marlin 101-T .22 cal rifle, which I got when I was 8, the same year every boy in the neighborhood got his first gun. Oddly enough, no one ever lost an eye, or a finger, nor did anyone ever get hurt with any of the toys and tools they won't let kids have today. We learned a thing called "responsibility" from our parents, and practiced it until we got it right. A pity it's become a lost art... :sigh:

How could I forget about Airfix. Another sadly gone company. I think that the kids in our generation had to build the toys themselves have done a lot for the development in science and technology.

I would have loved the American Basic Science Club. Erector seems to be similar to Meccano. I didn't get a gun of my own, but me and my brother used to shoot a lot with an airgun at home. And I spent countless hours at the shooting range with my dad mostly shooting clay pigeons. He's the reason I started competing with guns when I was younger.

My fault, I read about it's history on a page somewhere that ended with the bankruptcy 1981. A simple google would have corrected me. :sigh:

I believe that the Meccano stuff is made by the same company as the Erector set, Jorgen. I've seen it in stores, and it looks like very much the same sort of toy. Excellent, that is! :-D

I used to have a friend (we were 5 or 6 years old as I recall) and we would build the tanks and other vehicles and get the figures and play at war in the garden. I have no idea how we decided who won or lost but a lot of those little figures got mashed into the grass! His father had a loft that was kitted out as a large model railway. I'm sure my memory is making more of it than it was, but it was amazing to a small child.

I had loads: the Batmobile, the James Bond car and so on. Sadly, I outgrew them and handed them on to my cousin who proceeded to destroy them. I don't think they'd have been worth anything anyway as I played with them, I didn't keep them in the boxes. What child does that? :-)

Hmmm... This question could really lead to NSFW responces

Computers have been intelligent for a long time now. It just so happens that the program writers are about as effective as a room full of monkeys trying to crank out a copy of Hamlet.

The best toy I ever had was a Meccano set (Number 6). Using it you really learned mechanics, while building your own toys at the same time. I thought of whether I should add "as a kid" or not. But that wasn't what I had in mind. :)

I had loads: the Batmobile, the James Bond car and so on. Sadly, I outgrew them and handed them on to my cousin who proceeded to destroy them. I don't think they'd have been worth anything anyway as I played with them, I didn't keep them in the boxes. What child does that? :-)
