Client/Server Banking System Using VPN, Why not?
-
My bank is going to build an client/server Banking system. You know, there are a main data server at the head office and branch ofices connect to that server through leased line. I think it is secured enough to use Virtual Pravite Network using Internet leased line. Please give me your ideas. Thank You

Credits will be rounded down, debits rounded up... for this useful service, I shall not charge any fees in addition to keeping the rounded out amounts. Note, for a limited time only, I will apply the rounding to full USD's rather than the cents (or whatever currency you want to deal in). ;P Regards, Ray

Romeo, The issue is not the use of "VPN" as such, but which encryption mechanism is being used once the (VPN) tunnel is established (AES, 3DES, Blowfish, etc), and how secure the establishing of the tunnel is (simple user-id and password is obviously not good enough for a banking system). Bernd

I'm surprised a bank is using a VPN for connecting offices. I would have thought that they would use a leased line between offices, so: a) they can provide one centrally managed point of access to the internet, otherwise they have to have a firewall admin on each site. A weakness in one of the satelite offices using a VPN gives access to the whole internal network. They are more points of failure. Not good for a bank. b) a leased line is not hindered by bandwidth usage on the net at peak times of day. To get the same level of service with a VPN, you need QOS enabled, which chances are is not going to happen. How can a branch office in one contry get connected to the head office economically without routing through Internet using VPN ?
Don't think you can. A dedicated line is expensive. But think of the alternative. Something like Slammer kicks off on the net, and your VPN is affected. Your systems at the branch office may need to peform some kind of scheduled job, transmitting data between the two sites, but as the internet is knocked out with increased packet loss its affects the business. Now if the company has its own dedicated leased line not on the internet, while users will have difficulty accessing the net, the internal LAN/WAN still works fine. The business would not be impacted to such a great extent.
