Those who vote 1 instead of 5 I can understand () But those who vote 3 instead of 5[^]? :wtf:* * Perhaps they follow the idea that the best approach in life is the zen of steady hidebound - hence Avg(1,5) = 3

By voting 3 they can feel inclusive of the group, exercise their democratic right to vote and maintain the universal suffrage. However, on this occasion they may feel compelled to not affect the outcome. It is rather like a voter at an election choosing to deliberately spoil the ballot as a political act.

Maybe. However the comment should be 'unimpressive work' instead of 'good work', in my opinion.

Maybe you got only 3 because your article is a little bit short (No offence)

Maybe they consider anything that is thought worth publishing is "good work" by definition, and that 4 and 5 should be reserved for "exceptional" and "perfect"? If so, 24 hours of moderating the article queue would disabuse them of that notion PDQ... :sigh:

Pstt - couple of things. 1:- It's not his article, it's by walterhevedeich. 2:- It's not an article, it's a Tip - and they are shorter than articles.

Click the link, you'll see what I mean ... The bloke wrote: "Reason for my vote of 3 - good work!" BTW, it's not my Tip, which is irrelevant, and if you've mentioned it already, it's a terribly good one if you ask me.

I know I had an aberrant period where I refused to vote 1 or 5 as poor old 2,3,4 were all being ignored, but the comment does not reflect the vote!

I actually understand those who vote 3 (I am talking in general terms and not about that particular vote/post you are pointing to). I consider it a mid-level grade which you should be able to give without getting yelled at and put on the spot. I admit to 'over-voting' (is that a word?) at times. Since a lot of people get furious about receiving a 3-vote and you have to leave a comment for such a vote, I end up voting 4 or not voting at all. In either case, my action increases the average vote. Soren Madsen

I kind of think that should be reflected in the voting options - do we really need a 1-5 range for Tips? Soren Madsen

I believe, the rating system is bit confusing. When you have range of 1 to 5, normally (at least to me) it feels more like a marking system where you are giving 5 marks out or 5 while rating 5. or giving 3 marks out of 5 when you are voting 3. It took considerable time for me to understand that 1 and 2 is actually negative rating, 3 is no rating actually and 4 and 5 is actually up-voting. I remember raising this as a bug /suggestion saying it should be more clear. But it didn't pass through. I am still of the opinion that the rating system is confusing and more clarity is required.

                                    Thanks, Milind

Yes - you get good tips, and you get very, very bad tips that sneak through, gawd knows how...

I suppose you are right. I guess you can argue that comparing bad, short Tips to great, long tips is equivalent to comparing bad Articles to fantastic Articles. Soren Madsen

Those who vote 1 instead of 5 I can understand () But those who vote 3 instead of 5[^]? :wtf:* * Perhaps they follow the idea that the best approach in life is the zen of steady hidebound - hence Avg(1,5) = 3

Pstt - couple of things. 1:- It's not his article, it's by walterhevedeich. 2:- It's not an article, it's a Tip - and they are shorter than articles.
