So, got stuck in some traffic yesterday. Took a trip up the coast, had lunch and decided to hot foot it back down the 101. Almost an hour saw us go about ten miles. No accidents, no road works. Nothing. Suddenly the traffic cleared and we were on our way. WTE??? I don't get it. There was no rhyme or reason for the jam: nothing on the radio to indicate a problem; just a shit load of traffic that suddenly dissipated. I'm sure there's a logical explanation for it. Anyone??? As an aside, the place we had lunch: do not go there. It was awful. Only wish I could remember what it was called. Service: 0. Food: -10. Coffee: asked for decaf. Coffee arrived. Tasted. Hmm: that doesn't taste right. Decaf? Oh no, we don;t have decaf. WTE??????? What restaurant doesn't have decaf??? Maybe it was my accent. Only paid half the bill and left no tip and resent paying that much. Now I can work! :-)

It happens when two bad/dumb drivers doing 20 miles under the limit happen to be in the same place at the same time in two different lanes. After one of them leave the highway/stop texting/finish her makeup etc. the traffic restores back to normal in a few minutes.

I recall a study on the M25 in the UK ('circular' motorway that goes around the outside of London) where they showed that a single car putting on its brake lights can affect traffic for several miles behind. Spo it need not be an accident. Just someone pulls out causing another driver to brake, which causes other drivers to brake or change lane, which causes... The question with the M25 was, what would it take for the ripple effect to go around thw whole motorway so the arse causing it got held up too?

As can be seen from someone's Wikipedia link, traffic flow (and jams) make good research material. It's that interesting and it's that important. While it is interesting to come up with a scientific (mathematical) solution to the problem, I think part of the problem is how people interact with others. At least a good proportion of the problem is undeniably caused by the "me me me!" attitude. Things like people pushing into queues, blocking people entering the major route at merge points, changing lanes frequently in slow moving traffic or driving on the hard shoulder then pushing into the main traffic must be playing some part in congestion creation. I tend to take the attitude that slow moving traffic is better than not moving traffic so I think people should work with the other drivers so we can all get through at a reasonable pace rather than one person pushing through while causing everyone else to stop. On a practical note, here in Japan, many A-roads and motorways are on hilly locations so a heavy truck travelling uphill can easily clog up a major transport artery. Again, I think it's just tough luck. Live with it.

Almost, but not quite, entirely unlike... me...

It can be an accident, several miles ahead of the "end" of the queue you met. It's cleared, the traffic resumes moving and finally you get to the "front" (which is moving backwards) and there is nothing there to see... Decaf? X| Gives me a headache...

Didn't you do queuing theory in Maths? One car slows down by 10mph, the car behind slows down by 12, the one behind that by 15, etc. One nice pair of boobies really can stop traffic for miles.

Probably but it's so long ago that I've forgotten it. :-) Besides, I was having a rant. Felt good to let it all out.
