First Day of Windows 8
-
I've used Windows 8 before, but not as my main system until last week. The lack of Aero gives the whole thing a plastic, toy feel. The Start screen is ugly as hell, is loaded with crapware and is a genuine productivity killer--it takes several more cognitive steps to start any non-common program. The end result is that I have my task bar loaded up with even the most obscure programs. The truly annoying part is that none of this was necessary. It wouldn't have taken much effort (and maybe even less effort) to keep the Windows 7 look and feel on the desktop. The lack of choice is what pisses me off the most about Microsoft lately. Why not offer a menu alternative to Office? Why not let you re-skin VS 2012 to look like VS 2010?

I use the search feature a lot (Start Screen > Type > Click). Also, if you swipe in from the right side of the screen and select search, a list of all programs will pop up. I don't have much crapware, because I uninstalled it. (tap and hold on a tile, select uninstall).

Okay, I'm seeing some improvements but a lot of annoyances. I've set up my two main e-mails on the desktop mail, now I can't figure how to do bulk actions;e.g. select 10 e-mails for a sub folder I have to click bottom right 'move' then over to the left for the folder. Elephants! On the whole the Swiss Design doesn't do it for me, but we'll see how it goes as I progress. On the plus side, my dev environment is set up and I nearly wrote some code. I have also copied over all five series of the wire and most of Tour of Duty [for some reason the first 8 episodes are now missing]. Holnap it's move the music.

Using Win8 doesn't mean you have to use their "app store" Email client. Just hit Windows Key + D, go to the desktop and run whatever Email client you ran in Win7. Using Thunderbird here on Win8 and it works great. I don't think I ever use any of the new store apps myself. Just saying that using Win8 doesn't mean you have to switch over to doing things with the new apps.

Which is one of the dumbest things I've ever seen. It's a usability disaster. Again, the number of cognitive steps you have to go through is ridiculous; it's form over function.

Nagy! take a look at this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=JxclfFbQ2Is[^] Explains a Little bit the differences between 7 and 8. It's interesting and helpful... Unless you have to use 8 only to format and partition the HDD to install 7 of course...

It's a funny coincidence that one of my TV channels is doing a Bond marathon. I was watching Thunderball and You Only Live Twice last night. BTW, I am flattered by your comparison. :-O Soren Madsen

Thank you, I was browsing the comments to see if anyone wrote this. I used launchy on windows XP, I used the search function on the start bar in Windows 7, and I use the same now on the start screen of windows 8. The Start Bar or Start Screen are becoming irrelevant. Mac OSX has spotlight, and Ubuntu has their app search system too. Once you get in the habit of quick typing for the app you want, you will soon learn how much quicker this is than manually looking for the app and clicking on it. Windows 8 has some really nice features that windows 7 doesn't have. That said, windows 7 is prettier. Otherwise for what I use them for there really isn't much difference. (until you are forced to use SQL 2012) :D

There are plenty of articles about returning the look and feel of W7 to W8, including the Aero Theme. If you want to start in desktop and maybe get the start menu back, there are plenty of tools that do both. I'm happy with Classic Shell which does both and is free, but other tools may suit your needs as well or better. If you dislike the Start Screen as much as I do, spend some time to replace the utilities that are only available as W8 apps (mail, image viewer, music player, etc.) with a desktop utility, and reassign your default applications to prevent switching to an app when double-clicking a document file. Also, to take advantage of the actual improvements of W8, here's a site listing all the new (and old) keyboard shortcuts: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/keyboard-shortcuts[^]

Be very, very careful what you say in the house. I'm sure there was a bracelet or something that the money could have been spent on.

Yeah, the "move" mechanism is awkward.
