The U.S. is no longer the land of the free

The only other country I can really talk about is the UK which is, ironically, I feel, freer than the US, other than the recent 'hate' speech nonsense and the ridiculous proliferation of 'security' cameras. However, freedom is in the mind of the beholder. It is hard to quantify since I do feel pretty free here. As a private, law-abiding citizen I do my best to avoid situations that would cause me to be in a position to test the limits of my freedom. In nay case, perhaps no one is quite as free as they think they are any more. And perhaps the only really free people are those that do push against the system and get away with it.

They never were.

So you're basically saying that money == freedom? Well, the richer the country the freer it seems to be. Is that a cause or an effect?

Well, that too. Money buys you the freedom of choice but I'd still live within the law of the land. No, I meant people that do whatever they want and get away with it, rich or poor. There are always those that resist or confront societal norms and rules and seem to do it with impunity. They are truly free.

From what I understand about the financial crisis in Europe, I believe Greece may be the land of the free(loaders)!

It's well known that if all the cat videos and porn disappeared from the internet there would be only one site left and it would be called whereareallthecatvideosandporn.com

When has it ever been? You guys are being governed by installing fear in to mainstream society. Hence the government can make as many draconian laws as they want. Be afraid be very afraid there is a terrorist hiding behind every bush, corner or wherever else that is not in you line of sight. What leaves me gobsmacked in the US public swallows this line hook line and sinker.

Whatever it is, I'm against it.

Narnia.
This message is manufactured from fully recyclable noughts and ones. To recycle this message, please separate into two tidy piles, and take them to your nearest local recycling centre. Please note that in some areas noughts are always replaced with zeros by law, and many facilities cannot recycle zeroes - in this case, please bury them in your back garden and water frequently.

According to Matt Drudge? Putin is the leader of the free world, so perhaps Russia. Matt Drudge Tweets: "Putin is the leader of the free world..."[^] The site is a tad bit bias, but it was the first one that popped up when I googled to get a link.

Good question! Liberty may vary from your point of view. But I can say, although we are in some areas more free than the US and in others not, I won't call Germany the land of the free. Perhaps Switzerland?

I would say though that Germany is definitely one of the top contenders for the title. Largely because of history. After the war the constitution and the political system was purpose built to avoid a repetition of history. And it works too. Just go to Brussels (or Washington) and mention the Bundesverfassungsgericht and you will see a lot of people that will spit and swear a lot.
