We have an OTD for everything, why not GUID?

Quite. A thought it was a good joke, although I see you have been reported for it. Reporting is replacing downvoting more and more, and very rarely is what gets reported either abuse or spam.

Its a guid. Or else a unique id of a class or interface which can be used though COM.

It is not unique. It has a high probability of not already being used somewhere.

That much we know, but it's not present on the machine I'm sitting at, and gets zero google results, so I (and probably others) have no way of knowing what it's for.

And the probability of having one would be about 50% if every person on earth owns 600 million GUIDs.

I think you may be missing a few factors in your equation. i.e. some GUIDs are somewhat more ubiquitous than others.

Certainly. But that's a probability, which is always calculated based on some assumptions. And that figure was taken from Wikipedia - Globally unique identifier[^]. :)

I read an actual discussion about this very thing elsewhere, believe it or not, which is what prompted my reply. Not guaranteed unique is always true both GUIDs and UUIDs BTW, though the chances of generating the same two IDs are vanishingly small for truly random sets. The UUID I supplied, is the same as the OP, meaning neither my nor his UID are unique, negating them as either Universally or Globally unique IDs.

No sweat ... By the time we get close to running out, we will have come up with GUIDv6.

I have always wondered how they tell when we have run out? do we get a big error message stating "sys error" no more GUIDs available (probably with a sound clip going "na na na")
