Windows 8.1 Upgrade
-
I installed it over my Windows 8 Desktop PC at home. After rebooting and failing and rebooting twice again on an IRQL_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL error, it finally comes up and tells me that Windows 8.1 failed to install correctly and my OS was restored to the previous version. Huzzah! :omg: :wtf:  :~ :| X| :sigh:
Antivirus installed? IRQL_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL is a driver culprit, usually execing on a bad level (or paged out by windows - discussion is large). About IRQLs: What is IRQL?[^] Try to get a dump to see at least who is the offensive driver here. Maybe you can uninstall temporary the software, do the 8.1 jump, and put back after upgrade. Seems the upgrade raises a condition not handled by the software that crashes.

Thanks! I use Microsoft Security Essentials. If you can't trust Microsoft, who can you trust? :)

This should be the fun part.

I hit that with a network driver. Since Win8 and Win8.1 are much stricter about drivers (which is a good thing) poorly written drivers crash.

Well, I don't think is MSE. They test *VERY* hard their drivers. Some VPN, Cisco, ShrewSoft, 32-bit net driver ?

I've only recently upgraded to Windows 7, loving it so far :)

I've had enough Microsoft bashing. I'm sure if the same error happened with a Linux box, it would be bricked. At least he was returned to his previous OS!
The difficult we do right away... ...the impossible takes slightly longer.

Yep, I've had Windows 7 since it was released (My machine came with Vista-blech and a free upgrade to Win7).... And if I get a new machine with Windows 8, I plan to immediately upgrade to Windows 7 again :)
Proud to have finally moved to the A-Ark. Which one are you in?

Hi, I would recommend uninstalling your video card driver and network/wireless card drivers (and any other third-party drivers) before performing the upgrade. You could probably download a copy of Autoruns[^] and click the 'Drivers' tab to get a complete listing of installed drivers. If you go into 'Options->Filter Options' you can choose 'Hide Microsoft Entries' which will allow you to see only third-party drivers installed on your machine. Best Wishes, -David Delaune

Just updated my Dell dual boot Win7 x64/Win8 N version. Updated 8 to 8.1 N - somewhere around 3 hours or so (multiple updates needed before 8 => 8.1), but no troubles. FYI - is a development machine with nmap, fiddler, xarp, VPNs, VS 2008, 2010, 2012, WinDBG etc etc - a dev machine with all sorts of "things that can go wrong" installed on it. Plus MSE and various drivers from my work (Bitdefender :D). So, although my chances to blew it up are considerable large, it went smooth. That leaves "find the driver" to you.

Amen. And the upgrade worked flawlessly for most people (myself included). With any new release you're going to have some folks who run into trouble.
