What's this for?

A guy at one of the houses I drive by daily has recently erected this thing[^]. I tried Googling what it's for and I'm now considering stopping by one day and just ask. I don't know much about radio communication (other than what I've learned from being part of a WUG[^]), but this antenna looks like it works with very low frequencies, I don't understand why it's pointing straight up though.

It's for drying his washing - hence the ladder to get up there easily.
The only instant messaging I do involves my middle finger. English doesn't borrow from other languages. English follows other languages down dark alleys, knocks them over and goes through their pockets for loose grammar.

May be the spiders in his home is powerful enough to create such a massive home for it.

Maybe, but none of the ham antennas in an image search[^] are parabolic.
Quote from here:http://www.hamuniverse.com/ve3sqbprog.html[^] "Parabolic antennas are the most directional of all antennas and have the most gain. Because of their size, they are usually used for UHF and up. They are much easier to built than you think. Any long bar will bend to a parabolic arc when stressed on the end. If you mount 1 X 1 inch wood strips solidly to a center hub, a wire can be strung through loops on the outer ends. When the wire is drawn tight, the ends will curl up forming the dish."

I thought pretty the same: He finished to build an umbrella but a storm has taken away the umbrella material and left behind the deformed umbrella skeleton... :) ;)

Take my advice: DON'T go asking your neighbours about their erection. It'll give them the wrong idea about you (I hope :~)
