A guy at one of the houses I drive by daily has recently erected this thing[^]. I tried Googling what it's for and I'm now considering stopping by one day and just ask. I don't know much about radio communication (other than what I've learned from being part of a WUG[^]), but this antenna looks like it works with very low frequencies, I don't understand why it's pointing straight up though.
He's probably sick of all the Earthworm Jim cows landing on his roof and damaging the tiles.

I think the term you are seeking is "cobbweb antenna" used for HAM radio sets. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=cobweb+antenna+build&qs=PA&sk=AS1&FORM=QBIR&pq=cobbweb%20antenna&sc=6-15&sp=-1&qs=n&sk=[^]

It's called a hex-beam. It is basically a set of 2 bent dipoles on each of several HF bands. One of the dipoles is driven and the other is a parasitic element. The wires are held in tension by the bent radial frame and spaced so that the dipole lengths correspond to the necessary wavelengths on each band. Usually they are for the 20, 15 and 10 meter bands, but all sorts of other combinations (i.e. 17 and 12 meters) are possible. The lower frequency bands (i.e. longer wavelengths) aren't practical because the size gets too big. More information: Bing hex beam[^]
