...when 1 GB was a phenomenally huge amount of disk space (my first hard disk was 20MB!) Now Windows gives me a red "running low on disk space bar" and I still have 3GB left!!! :omg: Marc

I hit that with 10 GB left (on a 1 TB drive). That was caused by the search index file growing to 647 GB in size due to a bug in the automated defrag and another bug in the way Windows handles and limits the sizes of some system files, like the search index (can't remember where I saw that, I think it was on MSDN, but I am not sure, and Google nor Bing are of much help right now, although Bing gives somewhat relevant results, whereas the big G gives some rather odd results). I ended up having to terminate the search service and delete the file. An update shortly after fixed the issues.

Bleah. One of the first things I do when installing Windows is turn off search indexing. I know where my files are. Marc

My first hard drive was 10mb in an XT. The drive died within 6 months. It certainly beat using floppies for booting.

I keep it on, although I don't use the search much. I mainly use the search to look for files I know I have but inadvertently saved in or moved to a different folder. Half of the time recent files stuff doesn't work as it should (I don't know why. I get random 'File Not Found' errors, even if the file exists.)

In my first job we had one hard drive in the company, there were 4 of us on Apple II's running ProDOS and the bose would run builds on a 5MB hard drive. Sounded like a jet taking off when he started it up.

My first hard drive was the second floppy. Twin floppy system on an RM380Z. Then a 20MB IBM. Today we are running a huge server with >lots TB and cloud backup, offsite data and drop box for data transfer. I still pine for the mid 80's when Joe Public had no access to our systems and we were grand wizards. How I would rule the roost on my AS400 when I worked in the The City.

Now I remember an Olivetti with a 5mb hard drive on which we built a video rental system, later to be upgraded to 20mb when development was complete.

Yup. the first one I remember was the big foot drive. It didn't fit in a 5.25 drive bay so it was mounted on top on clone power supplies.

I lost my trust in the Windows searches a very long time ago. Total Commander is much more accurate, and in my opinion more usable as well.

Of course, you were lucky. I've still got an NT4 workstation sitting on a shelf which has much less of everything than my phone. They both work, but one is so old it's a joke and is utterly useless unless you want to cruise through a VS 1997 build. Incidentally, it has VB5. Almost the same as VB6, which still sells for hundreds.

I use Everything search, since it bypasses Windows entirely and just reads the drive header. :-D Only for NTFS drives though, but it can filter hundreds of thousands of filenames as you type without any pausing, from my experience. Freeware, too.

Oh the Research machines 380Z. Gosh that brings bsck good memories.

I may not last forever but the mess I leave behind certainly will.

Bleah. One of the first things I do when installing Windows is turn off search indexing. I know where my files are. Marc

I don't, but I use Agent Ransack to find them, not Windows's search.
