You talking about stuff like the Soundcraft Vi series? I can only dream about owning something like that. :sigh: I have an old Mackie 24-8, that does the job. Unfortunately it's starting to develop some issues.
It was broke, so I fixed it.
Had a Mackie 24-8 in the studio before switching to a Digital 8 Bus, which I still have. Was a huge Mackie fan back in the day. They seem to have lost their way since Loud bought them out. Still, I hope Greg Mackie has his own private island and is sipping drinks with little umbrellas in them. :) Just picked up a Soundcraft Si Expression 3 for the band I'm putting together. It's very nicely done.

Currently running Cubase for my recording software, but I've been through all the DAWs - Pro Tools, Logic, Cakewalk / Sonar, etc.

For studio use I love the D8B. I originally bought it for the flying faders and ability to save and replay mechanical mixes. These days I do all my mixing in the box with my DAW and so don't use that functionality. However, it's great to be able to save and recall mixer setups, and of course being a digital mixer the patching is great. I still use a Mackie HDR for tracking because it's zero latency. I have 24 tracks of ADAT light pipe giong between the D8B and HDR, so the signal chain is digital once it hits the mixer. After I've recorded the tracks, I use Filezilla to FTP them off of the HDR and bring them into Cubase for my mixing and work "in the box" from that point on. The D8B is "old technology" these days, so you should be able to get a good deal on one. If you can snag an HDR while you're at it, I highly recommend the combination.

By the way, after lots of gear upgrades this year I have a number of things I'm going to be selling in January, including a Yamaha GA 32 analog mixer, lots of Martin RoboColor IIs and 218 scanners as well as a couple of MiniMac Profile moving heads (DMX controlled lighting), a couple of follow spots, and some smaller things like Lexicon & Alesis fx units, RNC compressors, etc. If you know of anyone who would be interested, point them to the contact page on my web site.

Couldn't part with it. Not only do I love the thing, I paid close to $10k as I recall. They're on eBay now for about $1k. That would be too painful. I'll ride this pony 'til it drops. :)

Can't say as I blame you. :) When you get a nice peice of equipment it's hard to part with it. You get comfortable with the work flow. I use my 24-8 to feed a Layla 3G and record using Tracktion (Mackie...) and just hit record. The biggest issue I have is that it's hard to watch and adjust the levels when I'm playing. I usually need to adjust levels based on the previous recording. :^)

The Layla looks nice, I've heard good things about them. By the way, whenever you're buying new gear, this ia a company I just started doing business with. www.rncaudiodirect.com[^] Four guys in Memphis and they had the best price by far on the Soundcraft console - $2600 when map is $3000 and the best most were doing was $2800. Their service is also outstanding. Got the console and it had a bad fader. It was a new unit, not reconditioned, but you know stuff happens sometimes, especially with tech gear. These guys moved heaven and earth to take care of me. It's a fairly new and popular mixer out of the UK and they, their distributor and even Soundcraft US are out of stock. 30 days or so to get a new one in. I told the guy that the defect was cosmetic (color on the channel strip was AFU) so I'd just live with it until a new unit came in. He wasn't comfortable with me having something that wasn't 100% for that long, so he had the guys in California overnight me a B stock that they'd used at NAMM as a loaner (it looks brand new) until the new stock arrives in January. Normally people want to charge you for the what they ship and then credit your card when you ship the old one back, but that's not what they did. In fact, I still have the bad one sitting downstairs waiting for a UPS pickup. Very impressed with these guys. Don't think they sell used gear, but for new stuff they're on my first call list.
