What would you teach your 60 year old daddy?
-
About five hours from now my father will put down his keys on his office table, say farewell to his colleagues, walk home and never go back. He's retiring against his will. Polio (^) hit him a second time (^) after that nearly 60 years ago he got away with a thinner right arm only. Doctor says he must exercise, but not just moving his muscles and bones, but his brain too. So I brought him a 17" laptop and explained him how to search and find things of interest. But only reading isn't enough, so I intent to find him something to learn, and this what I'm asking you. Have any idea what to teach a 60 year old man?
Carpentering is a great physical and mental exercise. All you need is an empty room and some relatively inexpensive equipment.

Maybe writing would be his thing, he obviously spent many years doing something maybe he could blog about it or write a series of tutorials?

When I'm 60, in a little over eight years, I'd like my kids to teach me what the tides are in Hawaii. Then again, they're asking me to teach them the same thing.

You got him a laptop? Buy him a mouse. Pushing that around a desk all day will build up his right arm muscles. At least that is what I tell my mom.

My condolences to your to your father. Most people in the West have never seen the effects of that miserable disease. My father was stricken by it before I was born, but I know how it has affected his life. He would never wear short pants because of the disfigurement to his left leg. Now at 85 years old, his doctor shows him to younger doctors so that they can see the effects of a disease that hopefully none of them will never have to treat. I would think that the best thing that you could teach him is that he still has much to contribute. So instead of teaching an old dog a new trick, how about getting him involved in teaching young pups that they are not as smart as their mommies tell them. Granted this will really depend a lot on your father's personality, but I found most elder people really enjoy passing on knowledge. If he does not have the temperament to deal with young kids, them maybe he could teach adults. There are many options to consider from this business knowledge to possibly adult literacy classes.

Are you looking for only mental exercises? If yes, I guess he is old enough to choose. For physical exercises, take a look at this.[^]

Anything! Whatever interests him is what he should do! At 65 my dad started studying watch making and spent lots of time going to parks and the beach on Mondays with his metal detector. You'd be surprised at what people lost during the weekend. At 60 I went back to grad school. I'm now 63 and finishing my PhD.
