I was in discotheque last night (yeah, rock n'roll, baby), and I heard perhaps the only song in german which made a major hit in France, ""99 luftballons". "99 Kriegsminister Streichholz und Benzinkanister Hielten sich für schlaue Leute Witterten schon fette Beute Riefen: Krieg und wollten Macht Mann, wer hätte das gedacht Daß es einmal soweit kommt Wegen 99 Luftballons" Sounds weird in these days, isn't it?

Yep, had it in my sig when the whole madness started ;) The english translation doesn't catch up, except for one line: "If I had a souvenir / just to prove the world was here"...

If they are for War, they should enlisted in the Army, and be volunteers to jump the first over Bagdad.

The military training takes about 3 months for solid basic training with some time added for special training, jump school takes additional time - it'll be over before that. However, I am not speaking for them so many may have enlisted. Why do you assume they haven't? Mike

I remember a science fiction story where wars were waged by assasination - the top politicians and generals got it first ! They had very few wars...... Elaine The tigress is here :-D

In the one I remember, wars were fought by each antagonist selecting a surrogate. Both were dropped on an island, the country represented by the surviving surrogate won. Mike

So it would be ok for Saddam to ask Kim Il for a nuke, and drop it on New York, when this would make the US back up and he could claim less people died than in an attack on Iraq? And if the US doesn't back up, another nuke on LA would surely be justified? *That*s what the reminder is for: are you willing to die by the same logic as you give death? The US didn't "narrowly beat germany" - germany wasn't even working on it: Einstein and otehrs were afraid they would do. The US had over 200 nukes before anyone else had even one. So stop your selfrighteous claims about the goods of a bomb, that never fell over your country.

I never so much as suggested there was anything good about nuclear weapons. The point of mentioning that the logic of the time was that it would bring an early end to war with Japan was simply a reflection of the thinking of two generations ago that was used to justify the action. There was also no self-righteous intent, just a complaint over the sam old rant about the sins of my GRANDPARENTS... and a rant that does not lead to useful discourse, but merely offends. As for self-righteousness, was a nuclear weapon dropped on your country (or any country in your lifetime?). More rhetoric. peterchen wrote: So it would be ok for Saddam to ask Kim Il for a nuke, and drop it on New York, when this would make the US back up and he could claim less people died than in an attack on Iraq? No, and by suggesting this you echo some of the very rhetoric that is being used to justify eliminating Saddam once and for all. The fact that you would use it as an argument only lends credence to that rhetoric..... peterchen wrote: The US didn't "narrowly beat germany" - germany wasn't even working on it: Einstein and otehrs were afraid they would do. This[^] link (notes for U. Toronto history lecture on the subject) suggests that you are correct that they were not close, but incorrect that they were not working on it. gotta tell ya... a group called "Students For War" should be put at the top of the FBI's watch list. the only group higher should be the "Death To The Great American Satan Group". -c

oh don't be stupid. i'd have made the same comment if the group was "Students Who Want to Kill SUV Drivers" or "Students Who Think GWB Should Be Shaved and Painted Green".

We could discuss for ages how much responsibility a country has for it's history... The world won't become a safer place by bombing Iraq, but these mustardheads abuse fearmongering imagery to suggest that. The reminder served as a reminder: that the US did "the unthinkable" first, and at least it's people claim it was the best for all involved - but the same act done to a US town is "unthinkable". Rob Graham wrote: you echo some of the very rhetoric that is being used to justify eliminating Saddam once and for all That was my sole intention. A civilian in a town can not. For the self-righteous thing: My Hometown[^] was the first where an firestorm was caused intentionally. We had no Marshall plan for rebuilding, I grew up with the reminders of that night in my daily view, and still today there are a few scars. I'm not blaming or fishing for empathy, just telling the facts: I very well know how ruins in front of your door step look like.

Would it be fair to you to point out what Germany was doing during the early 1940's? Or better yet what the Prussian and French armies did to the population of the Palatinate (my ancestors) in the 30 years war? (Loss of life of 97%.) Why can't we just agree this is where we are and come to terms on how to proceed? I do agree that the imagery was not proper. "I will find a new sig someday."

"And for those who ask what has Saddam done to us, I ask what had the 9/11 hijackers done to us before 9/11?" Oh?, Ok!, I'm off to kill my neighbour, better him than me, you really don't know what those human are up to, do you?... Marchers chanted and carried signs that recalled familiar slogans such as "America — Love It or Leave It." This is the sort of things you only hear in Denmark from Skinheads and Nazis. It is amazing to see how many of the pro-war people confuses anti-war and anti-america, is it stupidity or provocation?.
