We've got to do better at work, and I don't have the time or interest to write anything. We have a clever lady in the office who is willing to figure out how to use a decent web development tool set, but she has no interest in becoming a guru. Does someone know of a packaged solution that can handle a small website, dashboard, calendar, event schedule, etc, that a non-developer can maintain easily? It doesn't have to be free, but it does have to be easy.

When I need to get a website up and running quickly, I use Joomla[^] ...there are tons of plugins for it, free and paid, including calendars, e-commerce, social networking, photo gallery, etc etc...see here for available extensions: http://extensions.joomla.org/[^] If you need custom content you can use a Content Construction Kit (CCK) plugin like K2 or Seblod; lets you make custom article types. ...and there are tons of templates out there, free and paid...one of the best paid template places I've found is Rocket Theme[^] You need PHP and MySQL installed, which will also run fine under IIS, which is what I use for development, then usually deploy to a Linux box. Your users can edit articles via the 'front end' right on the page or through the 'back end' which is where all the settings as well as content, plugins, modules, etc are managed. There are users and roles and you can restrict content based on the user's role if you want. Good luck!

It sounds sort of like what a CMS would do. DotNetNuke, Umbraco, and, arg, that other one that's Java based but looks really good, might fit the bill. Most of these are "plug and play" to add the aforementioned components. Gads, for that matter, WordPress might even be a possibility. Marc

I loathe PHP, but my answer to questions like this, is always Wordpress. It's widely used, widely supported, and has plugins for just about anything you'd want.

If you want an out of the box solution it isn't bad. Customization is another kettle of fish.

We had Sharepoint on our server at one point; no idea where it went. But back then I never found anyone - even here - who had any idea what to do with it, what it was good for, or how to use it. But that's generally what I need, a Sharepoint portal that a non-techie can easily populate and maintain.

Unless you want to do deep customizations, SharePoint is easy to use, otherwise I would suggest Joomla or WordPress.

I am in the process of building such a product that will allow a non-technical person to create and manage a website. A bit different from a CMS, simpler in design and use. Do you have or could you make a quick list of basic requirements? Does it need to be like SharePoint and have user lists as well as file posting and sharing? What other prime requirements do you have/need? How will it be used? You mentioned dashboard, calendar, and event scheduling as what I would call "module" needs. What other modules/module type functionality do you need in a basic product? This would be good input for this product/project. I could also put you on the beta release when I have a beta ready. One other CMS that might be worth consideration is Dot Net Nuke (DNN), the community edition (free) can be found here http://dotnetnuke.codeplex.com/[^]. The wikipedia entry[^] has some basic information and some links. The main site[^] under community and support has some good training material. If you use microsoft then this is worth considering uses SQL server and based on asp.net. There a free modules to cover most requirements, events, forum, document management. All the requirements l have seen in this thread can be met by DNN. There is an active developer community, and plenty of support sites, both free and paid. Personally l have been using it for over 6 years, and have built sites for both community and commercial use. I have used both Wordpress and Joomula, however l still come back to DNN that is more personal preference l suspect :-D.
