I guess I am getting my first tattoo on Thursday. Just three little dots so they can line the machine up for radiation treatments. :(

People get tattoos to make a statement. I don't know if I want to say the same thing, ten or more years from now.

I probably could have phrased the first part better: "Having a tattoo makes a statement." The remainder of my post still applies.

I had been wanting to get one since college, but I didn't want to get some generic, off-the-flash one. I finally found an artist I liked who gave me a unique design: a bear totem from the Pacific Northwest that had been restyled to look like a Maori tribal design. It is on my calf, where aging and changes in weight are less likely to smear it. I agree with you that many tattoos seem to have been gotten while drunk or under the influence of peer pressure. But many are also the result of research and careful thought. I my case, it is a design that I identify with and have no problem being marked with indelibly.

Tattoos are a very personal thing. If you get one it should mean something to you. Some people just get it to show off or for the shock value. I don't agree with that practice at all. I have 15 so far, including 2 Quake and one Unreal tattoo. All 15 mean something and reminds me of something. I can respect people for deciding not to have any. Having a diverse world make it much more interesting.

My plan is to live forever ... so far so good

Interesting and a little surprising. Tattoo removal and re-tattooing are also popular at the moment. Talking about Fads I wish the YOYO would come back again. It always used to every few years. Haven't seen it for sometime now. It was always sponsored by Coke and Fanta. Guess they found something else as a promotional medium. I am not going to get a tat, but I think I will get out the clutched Yoyo and see if I can still do a walk the dog, a dog bite (my favourite), an around the world and a rock the cradle. I use to see a lot of Sanskrit tats on people but now they are often Chinese characters. A friend recently got a tat that consisted of 2 Chinese characters. I asked him what it meant and he said, "Truth and Wisdom" I googled them chars and had to reveal to him that it really meant "Elephant you, you round eyed Sunshine." Sorry the last sentence is actually a lie, but it very easily could have been permanently true. Interesting Post Greg Thanks

Simple household rule regarding tattoos: must be 50 years of age or older to get one. By then, all your beliefs and opinions are not likely to change; you are wiser too. As for me having a tattoo: would you put a bumper sticker on a Lamborghini?

People are like dim sheep. Something becomes popular with little Johnny or little Mary and everyone else says "Me too!". Marketing people take advantage of this constantly. (Personally this explains the whole Apple Mac and Ipod and Iphone phenomena for me.) The obvious answer to this is the ubiquitous answer your mother had when you were growing up. "If everybody went and jumped off of the bridge...." I was born with all of the holes and pigmentation my body will ever need. I am on the I don't get it side.
