    It's a very small company. I haven't used those exact words, but someone else has. My manager actually says "this place is toxic" and "I think I'm goina quit" very often. The other programmer here doesn't expect to be here another 3 months. The other two are data processors, and throw temper tantrums pretty regularly.

    As long as someone else is aware it's toxic then you've done all that you can. Time to move on. Whereabouts are you based?

      I worked here before, and it was toxic. I went to another place and it was great, and I really learned a lot. They wanted me back here when that place closed down. Wanted me to change the world implementing the stuff I learned at the other place.... Couple months and I find out that it's the same. Still toxic. I gave it some time to see how it would work. 7 Months now, and it just gets worse. If I try to stay to myself and just "do my job" then I have an attitude because I'm not bubbly and talkative like normal. I've decided I'm moving on. I don't know how/when to tell the boss. I feel bad for leaving, even worse that this is the second time I've worked here.

                I am friends with a couple of they guys, and this was my first job out of college. I'm hesitant because I feel bad.

                You can still be friends with them when you leave. I am still friends with people I have worked with 30 years ago.

                  Believe him and get out of there. :doh: He won't hold it against you and may even be a good reference in the future if you tell him why you are leaving. After you get another job that is.

Sometimes identifying who these people are and just staying away from them is all that is required for happiness.

                        Been there, done that, moved on, never looked back, happily ever after. Don't feel bad for leaving, feel bad for the time lost in that place, that's what I realized as soon as I left.

                          Unless your friends are part of the problem, do them a favor and get out, then try to help them get out too. Friends like that are much better than friends who just suffer alongside you.

                          We can program with only 1's, but if all you've got are zeros, you've got nothing.

                            The other guy is leaving as well. He's been here just a bit longer than me. It puts the company back to one programmer :( They need to change if they are going to retain people.

                              Also, make sure that your new position is hiring you full time w/ benefits right up front. I had an offer once, but when I started, they suddenly told me that they were going to have me contract for six weeks just to make sure they were okay with things. It was not big deal for me at the time, but if I had given up a position w/ benefits for that, I would have been pissed. (i.e. offer in writing) If you've got a position lined up and you're ready to leave, then just do it. Don't bargain, or take any counter offers. They'll probably just let you go later when it's convenient for them and not you now that they know you're not happy there. Things rarely change with the exception of a bit more money. There is no loyalty, just bottom lines, and you've shown that you can learn and empower yourself to get a job elsewhere when you need to.

                                Had the same problem. My manager left... he was among the first employees in the company, tried to impose his honest point of view, betting on the seniority card and ran into a wall.. now he's happy at google. My friend in systems left .. after a college kid with no prior linux knowledge, that they hired recently got root access on a production box, 2 weeks after starting... now he's happy at redhat. After having my hopes crushed, I left as well for a better position. And last month the last member of our team left the company, after making his life miserable for 4 months longer. We all met a couple of months ago, and we talked about how things were and why we left, and we all concluded that it was the right decision.

                                  Don't feel bad, business is business, even when you're close with your coworkers; personally, I wouldn't have come back unless I had no choice, given that unless the reason of the problem goes out, the environment won't change.
