How many restarts does it take to get a Windows Update to work properly

It would be impossible to do my job if I was not on the domain... Well not impossible but would require more systems and one of them would have to reside on the domain and then I would add a lot of manual steps to my workflow X| In general I am able to avoid IT, but its those days (that actually become weeks) that I have to deal with them that... well :mad: Some of our insanity is in fact for sane reasons. We have to deal with ITAR and EAR.
Computers have been intelligent for a long time now. It just so happens that the program writers are about as effective as a room full of monkeys trying to crank out a copy of Hamlet. The interesting thing about software is it can not reproduce, until it can.

I bet MS would say something like "Just enough". I always reasoned it depends if more updates are dependent on the to-be-installed updates... I've had to reboot 3 times so far. The worst is when one update fails in the middle due to being dependent on one further down the list, so it removes the rest as well. You may now resume working for up to 4 hours (unless you use Process Explorer to suspend wuauclt.exe ;)) And "Bing Desktop"? Who needs that? That's about as useful as Chrome's new 'new tab' page. :~

I may not last forever but the mess I leave behind certainly will.

The irony is that I got Windows working really well for the first time ever by reformatting my hard disc and doing a fresh install of Windows XP, and now they are going to discontinue it! Let me add, however, that Ubuntu is a doddle to install. I now run Windows XP and Ubuntu on dual-boot and that's the way I intend to keep it in the near future.

I bet it's due to third-party software. I work for a company that provides configuration management software for Windows systems part of which is patch management and policy enforcement. Oftentimes that is what is causing the rebooting issues, not Windows directly. Sometimes when the software updates itself, it needs to reboot two or three times, especially when drivers are updated. Every time one needs to be updated, it has to copy it to a side location, poke the registry to have the OS replace the file as it boots, then have you reboot. I don't know what happens if you have two updates that want to replace the same locked file :confused:
