Elephants don't peel their bananas!
-
I have just come in close contact with elephants again. Their droppings are all over the roads and trails around the village. The event is the third day of the Thai new year celebration of Songkran (happy new year 2775 B.E.). Pachyderms converge on the village every year to carry the aspiring monks to the Wat (temple) for their induction into the monkhood. My 12 year old nephew is doing this for the second time this year. I always forget how large these jumbos are until I see one in a field eating by tearing branches from a tree as I did on my daily bicycle ride this morning. Getting up close to them this afternoon just reinforced the awe I have for these giants of the natural world. One thing I have learned from watching them graze on my banana trees as they lumber down the road next to my field which is lined with banana trees is that they don't peel their bananas before they eat them. They just grab the whole bunch and stuff them into their mouths. Just thought I would share. :-D

I read your reply and understood what you were saying. :-O Not to take away from their awesome presence. Have you ever been for a ride on an elephant? There are not a lot of things like it that I have ever experienced.

I have seen elephants abused in Bangkok, but these elephants in the province seem to be treated better. At least they look happier. The one I saw this morning eating branches from a tree seemed happy. (S)he was at least able to eat natural food, and I have seen them rip bananas and leaves off my banana trees. Then again I don't know what the elephant was thinking. :suss:

I'm on-line therefore I am. JimmyRopesThe problem with bananas is that after you peel 'em and throw away the bone there's nothing left to eat! ;)

I'm on-line therefore I am. JimmyRopesI was feeding bananas to an elephant somewhere in Asia by peeling a banana off the bunch and giving it to her. All I managed to do was piss her of, she eventually reach out an snaffled the bunch. Greedy bitch, they cost me a dollar. Wait till you meet the african elephant, they make the asian/indian look puny. I'm 6'3 and I have a photo of me standing upright UNDER the head of a bull, amazing.

They get rather impatient when you tease them with a single banana at a time.

Yes I have seen African elephants and they are larger. Although I did see a large bull yesterday that made the other elephants look small by comparison.

Brave man. I never got that close to an African elephant. They were not as well mannered as the Asian variety.

Not at all this couple[^] have been living with these 3 elephants for 20 years and are considered part of the herd, the bull has defended them against curious lions, they are absolutely amazing and BIG.
