 Just great! For some reason why I like being a programmer is because people can't mess with me given the fact that they don't know what I'm actually doing.

As an engineer, I never have to deal with explaining what I do. So few can understand it that they mostly walk away or change the subject, sorry they asked.

Them: So what do you do for a living? Me: I'm a programmer. Them: ....Oh...OK. Me: I'm in IT. I work with computers. Them: Oh good. Can you take a look at my computer. It's become slow and sometimes it won't start. True story.

Signature construction in progress. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Damn you have the perfect signature - CBadger

The real challenge is to find one CP member that this hasn't happened to.

I've been nearly electrocuted at 230V, hasn't stopped me from working on electrical / electronic projects yet. What I can't understand is how people can work on things running at hundreds of kilovolts.

Talk to Roger Wright, a CP member of long-standing. He builds substations for his local electrical utility for fun.

The discussion below made me recall - I once told someone I make software and she replied, "Oh so you design stuffed toys?" From then on I'm a computer programmer if anyone asks, even though only a small fraction of my work is actual programming. No blonde jokes please

You should try being a DBA, SQL Dev... I just tell people I fix things that none one else understands, including myself. :)

Common sense is admitting there is cause and effect and that you can exert some control over what you understand.

Well, I don't want, but I have to (just to be nice). I don't know what I have but I keep on attracting nosy people. They always ask anything about me and try to pretend that they understand the nature of my job, although they didn't. When I was in college, when they knew I was taking Computer Science, they keep saying I'm going to be a call center agent after. Once, I applied on a television network and they ask me if I'm going to be a newscaster. Then I applied on a bank, and they ask me if I'm going to be a teller.

Haven't tried that one. Thanks.

It could have something to do with being gorgeous. Some people have trouble relating to a pretty lady with a brain. Hang in there! :-D

Isn't UK the country that has given us Chartered Surveyors, Chartered Quantity Surveyors and a whole bunch of other certifications? If that isn't regulating trade, what is?

I'm not going ot get into a nationalist pi$$ing contest. We have chartered engineers too, but membership is strictly voluntary. If an employer wants to call some kid out of school an engineer, they can.
